My advice would be to ask a fansub group that has been around awhile, or maybe find some anime fans that have collected since the tape trading days. If nothing else, maybe you can get some VHS sent over to you. Wouldn't that be fun (if you have a VCR)? :) Have you tried posting on some fansub forums...

Hmm...I see what you mean. If it is a repro or fancel or whatever, they did a good job. I was trying to look at the details like shading, certain lines, etc. The orange reflection in his hair seems slightly different. I don't know.

Shingeki no Kyojin sounds interesting. I'm both a fan of giant monsters and creepy shows, so it looks like a winner to me.
