Rubberslug Image Linking

Post by Gonzai »

It has come to my attention that people are using Rubberslug
to link images. Please read the Beta Rules:
6. Hosted Images. If you are displaying an image on the forums, please make sure it is hosted on your own webspace, or that you have permission from the host. Do NOT link images to other sites - Rubberslug specifically has forbidden direct linking.
I have sent several of you pm's requesting you to change posts
that link images to Rubberslug. If you are linking images to
Rubberslug, please stop. This has been a Beta rule for a long
time now. If you were unsure about this before, now you know
it is not permitted. I appreicate everyone's cooperation. :)

Basically it is taking the image from the Rubberslug hosting - which is a free service provided by Jason. In essence...it is stealing bandwidth. There are several free sites that can host your images...I use geocities, but there are several out there.

What they mean is... don't put images in your post (using the [ img ] tags) that are hosted on rubberslug.

Example: (what you're not supposed to do)

[ img ]http://yoursite.rubberslug.com/blahblahblah.jpg[ /img ]

What's ok is posting a link to your cels on Rubberslug... like this:

http://betsuni.rubberslug.com/gallery/i ... mID=213688

I think its really often glazed over what is meant when we say "hotlinking". Hot linking does NOT mean linking to a page or content. Hotlinking is when you embed an image or content in your page that is not hosted on your site (so obviously hosted on someone else's site). It is bandwidth theft because in order to display the content on your site, it has to download it from the source site first. Make sense?

Side note: It is possible to prevent hotlinking to your own content by using .htaccess files.

Oh, I actually thought hotlinking was linking a URL. Thanks for the clarification. ^^

What are these files and how do I use it? (Sorry if this question is stupid - I've never heard of .htaccess files. :sweatdrop )

.htaccess files can be used by folks hosting their own sites to control who is allowed to access what content on their site. They can also tell bots what is ok to index and what is off-limits. If you don't have your own hosting, don't worry about them ;). If you do, here's a little decently-written resource on them:

In particular, with regards to hotlinking:
