If, when you say someone tied up your auction, you mean that the history shows another bidder with the same ending bid as yours ... I think what probably happened is that this second bidder (perhaps through sniping ...??) put the same max/ending bid as yours. But, you won the auction because you placed that bid first.
I could be wrong ... and I'm sure someone will correct me if I am ... but I believe ebay gives priority to the person who places the bid first. So, if you place, say, a $100 max bid on an auction the very first day it's listed, and, then, a sniper comes along in the last few seconds and also places a $100 bid, leaving the auction to end at $100 ... your bid will win because you placed it first.
