rules for canceling a bid?

Post by HotIce »

I just had my bid canceled for no other reason than (error????) - NO my bid wasn't in error, and I'm not exactly suspecious looking buyer... at least not with 170(+) and 0(-). What are the rules for bid cancelations??? Can you really cancel an auction to make sure a friend gets it cheaper, or because it isn't selling for as much as you think it should. >_<

I'm just venting b/c I'm annoyed.... Such is life on ebay I guess. *sighs*

In the ebay rules it has to be a legit reason. they give examples such as:

The bidder contacts you to back out of the auction.
You are unable to verify the bidder's identity, after trying all reasonable means of contact.
You want to end your listing early because your item is no longer available for sale. In this case you must cancel all bids on your listing before ending it.

Ive never cancled bids before.. that is strange. It doenst give you a list to choose from like when you cancel and auction.

I've cancelled people's bids for a couple of reasons in the past.

1. The buyer asked me to because their kid had bid on it without permission.

2. I made a mistake in the listing and relisted the item.

3. A bidder I didn't trust bid so I cancelled their bid and added them to my blocked bidder's list.

Hopefully in your case, it's #2.

That's not good! Sorry to hear that!

I'm pretty sure that it's not against the rules to randomly cancel bids.

That's a right that ebay gives all sellers!

I wished it was different!

but it does come in handy!

One of my competitors kept wanting to buy one of my rings!

I just canceled it since I didn't want my competition to have one!

I'm sure you'll find another one that's better!!

Ebay says that you need a legitimate reason.

But people lie. If someone cancelled your bid for a suspicious reason, it's probably a good thing that you got out of the auction before something worse happened. :? When you're bidding on something like cels, I know how much it sucks, though. :l

Yep, I think it's like RoboFlonne said. They don't need a reason. I agree that it is extremely frustrating. I'm sorry it happened to you. :l

Maybe you can contact the seller for an explanation. Of course, they may ignore you. In that case, do you really want to do business with someone like that anyways?

Which did they cancel - your bid, or the auction (i.e., did you check to see if the auction was still listed after you got the cancellation notice)? Both are allowed, but the reasons that eBay accepts are completely different.

well i guess its good to know that i can cancel a bid if its not selling for as much as i want... >_> I did message them asking why my bid was canceled... they told me they stepped on the DVD case and the DVD(s) broke. Just seems strange that they break within 5 minutes before the auction ends. It could happen, and they did reply to me. As i said, i was just venting some annoyance in missing out on an auction. Only means i need to keep looking. ^_^

Sorry Moop! I'm the self proclaimed type-o queen... they canceled my bid. Someone else bid and got canceled, but that person bid again and won. (this was, all within 5 mins of the auction ending). which made me wonder. But as I stated above, it just means that I need to keep looking. :D

Thank you to everyone who have read and responded here. :)

I put in my bid 7hrs before it was supose to end... then laid down to sleep (slept 12hrs... damn bronchitis) woke up to find my bid canceled. At least I got a reply back from the seller, i honestly wasn't even expecting that.

How weird. Kind of sounds like the seller couldn't figure out how to cancel an auction, so they kept on cancelling bids, instead. Oh, well... here's to finding another at a lower price!
