Re: Oh, Ebay, how I hate you
That is not surprising. I am sure it is so they force people to use paypal and get merchant accounts. I had a run-in with paypal and ebay about a year ago. I clearly stated on my sale page that I would only accept MO. So some idiot pays by cc on paypal. You wouldn't think it was a big deal - just go and deny it since I just have an basic account. But no, the button to do so was grayed out and "customer service" (I say with a sneer) says that I had to accept it or wait the 30 days for it to expire! I told the buyer that s/he would have to pay with a MO and take it on faith that it would expire. Luckily, they did and it expired so no harm done between buyer and seller. Right after that, I made sure that my paypal account was not associated with ebay (it adds one more step in paying, but who cares). While I usually only sell every couple of years, I guess I won't be selling on ebay.klet wrote:http://pages.ebay.com/sell/August2008Update/Overview/

Actually, it doesn't surprise me too much, but it still infuriates me. I mean, I sell things only a couple times a year, if that, and I can't afford to lose money to Paypal (or a merchant card, which would cost more for a casual seller).
I know that every one of their steps in regards to Paypal is just to get more money in their pockets. They couldn't give a beaver's home about safe trading.

this is bogus and garbage
I have a lot of my buyers who want to pay with a MO
its just another way for G-bay to get more fees from us....
forced to use paypal where they put funds on hold (on my account becuase I have under 100 feedback)
and they collect all that interest from their bank.
And they take their fees from the money.
electronic money gets them the most profit.
this is crazy

so people will just check off that option and send a MO or check anywayWhat payment methods can a buyer choose when paying on pickup?
Buyers may choose whatever payment method seller and buyer agree to when they pay on pickup, including checks, money orders and cash. We encourage sellers to specify in their listing description what payment methods are acceptable if a buyer pays on pickup. Also note that sellers may not select "pay on pickup" as a sole payment option in their listing. At least one of the approved electronic payment methods must always be an option for buyers.

but they can in a way force you to go get an account. on some auctions there is an option where it says "paypal account required".chibikitty2045 wrote: so people will just check off that option and send a MO or check anyway![]()

That's not fair. I always pay with paypal, because I generally never have the funds for a money order when auctions pop up, but still, I HATE them!
It's wrong of ebay to force sellers to accept paypal, but now to not allow any other forms of payment is ridiculous. They are going to lose a lot of buyers & sellers.

Actually "adult" items and a few other categories (auto?) are exempt from the "no mo/checks" thing.iwakuralain16 wrote:ReiTheJelly wrote:eBay seems to be trying harder and harder to alienate their customers (both sellers and buyers). Honestly, it doesn't bother me. I only accept PayPal anyway. I don't have time to go to the bank during their business hours. Plus, they love to charge their fees too as if I go in too many times in a month I get charged. They won't deal with money orders so I have to do postal money orders. And the post office hates dealing with money orders. Besides, the post office has the same hours as the bank so it's a pain for me. I use the kiosk a lot for mailing. It's open 24/7.
I know, change my work hours.
As much as people may hate it, my shipping fee is padded a dollar or two to cover some of ebay/PayPal fees. I don't hide the fact that it is my shipping AND handling charge. I've never asked anyone to pay PayPal fees. I can't technically afford losing the PayPal fee either but I have had up to 3 digits taken away from me in those fees. It hurts sometimes but when you think of the stuff you're selling as something you just paid a rental fee for, it doesn't hurt as bad.
I just remain happy I got some money back.

I wouldn't be so pissed if it wasn't just a blatent attempt on Ebay's part to get more money out of people.
While I'm sure cel auctions are odd enough to be protected for a time, Ebay is now setting a ceiling on how high shipping prices can be for certain items. So, eventually, you may not be able to pad those shipping prices, DT.
I'm sure books is one of those categories, and it'll really hit textbook sellers. Half.com already does this, but it doesn't take into account the weight of textbooks. They're lumped together with all the rest of the books. While it may only cost $1.50 to ship a mass market paperback by media mail, a paperback textbook is much, much heavier. But, the mass market seller and the paperback seller get the same amount of shipping money back from Half.com (and it's less than what the buyer pays for shipping). It's barely enough money to cover the actual shipping charges, let alone packaging.
And I think I may be underestimating how much the books I sell weigh.
