Spiderman cover WOW!!

Post by blueshinma »

So I've been kinda leaning toward comic art lately. Looks like I cant afford it either.

It has tack holes and a big old crease down the middle! :rollin

Yowza!!

I think affordability depends on who the artist is... And prob also the fact that it's a cover and not a random page affects the price too....

I remember ogling some panels of comic book art by Curt Swan and Neal Adams a few years ago at the Baltimore comic con...they were running around $200-400 I think....which was too expensive for me then but seems pretty reasonable compared to what can be spent on cels...(also Spiderman is probably more popular than Superman these days, heh.)

I don't know if prices have dramatically increased since then or not. My favorite webcomic artist's work exceeds 1K in auctions, but it only is available for sale when there are charity events.

Am I the only one who finds the listing obnoxious? LOL

"I fully believe that this art will command at least $250,000 to $1,000,000 in the future."

No, he doesn't. At least he doesn't believe it will within one human lifetime. If he did, he would be selling it in the future and not now. Duh.

"On the side is December 4, 1986, and under Todd’s signature it says 89. Since his art was so great, it might have taken that much lead time to do it. I am uncertain of the date of the official comic release."

I know nothing about why comic art is dated where it's dated, but I DO know that it does NOT take a professional artist three YEARS to draw a comic cover. Moreover, this guy has supposedly been in the comic business for decades, has already stated he knows exactly how many covers were drawn by McFarlane, and yet he doesn't know the release date of this book? I've listened to comic-knowledgeable people talk. I call baloney just from that.... However, he has the ISSUE NUMBER. It took me about 3min to google the relase year of 1989.

"And it has four holes where I had put it up on the wall with push pins. Since there is only one of these in the world, I hope you don’t mind."

I guess this is what I find MOST obnoxious. He hopes you don't mind that he intentionally damaged an original and unique piece of artwork? Can you imagine if someone put that into a CEL auction description? That there's only one in the world, so you shouldn't mind they put tack holes in it and tacked it up in the sun? I would laugh if I weren't disgusted.

Best of all, for this HUGE amount of money, he will only take money order, which is NO LONGER ALLOWED by Ebay.

Many Sharp Smiles,

The listing is really obnoxious, I'm imagining the comic book guy from the Simpsons trying to sell this thing off his wall. Then again, I have never been a McFarlane fan, although I respect what he did for the spiderman title.

There's beautiful artwork by specific artists being sold at their own sites, for example Mike Mignola or Brom's work. For significantly less! I would check out the sites of comic artists you like instead of scout the bay :)

best,
ten

As one who has collected comic artwork for well over 30 years I do know that it costs a lot more than anime cels.

That said, this guys nutso if he truly thinks he can get that price for this piece. Especially with it being damaged.

Beautiful piece, just a real shame about the owner. You'd think people would take pride in these and do their utmost to preserve them.

When something is just a neat souvenir, it's easy to do all sorts of unwise things, then regret them once it becomes clear that it has value in a collector's market. At least the seller came clean about it rather than hush up condition issues or imply that the art was pinned by a previous owner or even by the magazine staff.

For the record, many of my original production backgrounds show signs of having been push-pinned at some point in their use, I presume to the light desk where they were photographed.

Yes, that is a very fair minded way to look at this, Sensei,
at least the seller came clean, was honest and admitted he did
it, but still........he also states he has been involved in this type
of collectible for many years so he should have known a little better...
push pins....ouch......

To be honest, for that price I would want more Spider-man and less The Lizard. But hey, eye of the beholder, right?

I say it again... wow! 71,200 thats almost a house around here. But it got me thinking, the shipping method was listed as Priority Mail (I think I would drive to Texas and pay/pick it up in person, but everyone is different), How much can you insure a a package for?

Yeah. There is no way I'd send a $71,200 money order through the mail and then expect this crazy person to carefully pack/ship the item, regardless of the shipping method.

And yes, the insurance limit on Priority AND Express mail is $5,000. He'll have to send it some other method (not USPS), if he wants to insure it for the full amount.

If I recall correctly, for the post office, isn't there a max limit of $1,000 per money order?

So doesn't that mean the winner needs to get 72 money orders!!? :o

Well, I think we are way over thinking it. I'm sure if he just stuck it in a manilla envelope and threw a stamp on it it would be fine.

Manilla envelopes cost money. Just fold it and chuck it in a regular envelope. That way, it'll only cost 44 cents to mail!

---OR---

Why even bother with an envelope! Just write the address on the back and stick a stamp directly on it! I'm sure the postal service will treat it well...
