i know very little of you, and talk to even less sadly. but i was putzin around, and found this. its a photo, my grandfather took back in WW2 while he was a marine. This was taken near the end, in Okinawa. The Navy Photographic Institute awarded him for the photo on oct 27th 1945. its been published, ive seen it on various sites. maybe some of you have even seen it. anyways, not even sure why im doing this, just felt like sharing something was all. those of you who know i take photos myself, might agree with my family, this is where i probably got my eye for it, from him.

The Doctor : … and then, just to finish off, I’m going to wipe every last stinking Dalek out of the sky !
Dalek : But you have no weapons ! No defenses ! No plan !
The Doctor : Yeah ! And doesn’t that scare you to death ?

That is a very interesting picture indeed!
My great-grandfather was in the forces but never fought during that time, I'm really not sure why he didn't unless his service ended before the fighting broke out. He did, however take lots of pix while being stationed in Panama. I swear one of the guys he has a pic of looks just like Panama Jack in the Panama Jack logo! He took alot of pix of the scenery, airplanes, his troop, and various other higher commanding officers. I used to take them to my history classes back in high school but my great-grandmother really couldn't tell me much about them other than he was stationed there. She also had sweet little love letters saved from the time he was in service.
I had asked her once how did her and great grandad meet? She told me that there were ads in a magazine looking for penpals for the men in service. She spotted his ad and began writing to him and wrote for more than a year. He was finally on leave and came to visit her and they married, lol!
Wish things were that easy nowadays. Again that truely is an awesome pic thrance! Wish I had some pix here with me so show everyone but they are back home with my family. We even had a pic from great grandads side of the family that lived in New York (I think the pic from from the very early 1900's) that showed his great aunt posing and standing next to a propped up coffin with her dead son, who was about 10yrs. old, so they could get their pic made together. I thought it was creapy! But Great Gran said that's what they did back then. *shivers*

Wow. Great photo, thrance. Thank you for sharing that. I have some pictures of my father and some of his company when they were in Italy and northern Africa during the war. The pictures are during better times, when he and his company were sharing some camaraderie.
(I'm sure I told you before how that X-Files episode in your sig is one of my favorites!)

Everything about that is beautiful. Thank you!!
Hey, don't ever feel hesitant about sharing things like this. Artwork is part of the reason we're here, right? I think we all have an eye for something good. Especially!! don't feel hesitant to post your own work, which is absolutely outstanding.

thanks all
dbzmomma hehe yes you have, i think this is the third time! also if you can, you should post some of those photos
Sugarflower, same with you, if you can please post some!
Bevhippy, no idea. I have no idea if it was just a stray, an "adopted" dog or if they were in a ruined town and the dog was there. I cant really ask my grandpa since he passed, and I dont think anyone else knows, so I guess it will remain a mystery.
Uende, no. this photo, I didnt even scan. I couldnt find our photo of it, so I looked online. And sure enough, on some college site, and some marine dedication site, I found it. emailed them both telling em the deal of who took the photo. So I yoinked the image because thats not really stealing it now is it. We do though have a book from the Navy I think with 100 greatest WW2 photos. Also have a plaque my grandpa had made for my mom with a copy of the photo and the award embossed on metal, and finaly we have a little bigger then the image i posted, framed photo.
The original, I think was lost or damaged, which bummed everyone out, because I remember <i was real young though at the time> all this excitment that he had found the negative to make copies. Dont know where the negative is though either.
again, thanks all. just seemed like a feel good photo worth posting
