Knowing Your Japanese Folklore Monsters

Post by transmet »

Recently, I stumbled across The Obakemono Project, and thought I'd share. It's a wonderful Gaijin's guide to the fantastic folklore monsters of Japan (as well as a helpful resource for the many Inuyasha fans out there :^^:). Being an FMA fan (of course), I was also fascinated to learn of the fantastic chimera creatures of the legendary Himmapan (or Himapan/Himaphan) Forest of the Himalayas over at Himmapan.com, featuring several illustrations and photos. Fun stuff! 8)

That's a good book.

I found that Myths & Legends of Japan written by F. Hadland Davis to also be a great help understanding a lot of stories in verious Anime's such as Blue Seed that use the Myths in their stories. That book also has some fabulous illustrations by Evelyn Paul.

Heh. I kind of like that site. It's interesting to see the roots of some of the little goblins you find in anime. :D

I love this site! I find folklore of any kind endlessly facinating. It reminds me of an episode of Kamichu! where the gods of VHS, Laserdisk and DVD are gathered and VHS and Laserdisk are complaining that they are not as revered as before..... It is certainly an eye-opener. :)

Very awesome. I forwarded the links to Cam, who is a huge monster/spirit of japan buff. (Joe, we have that book too!)

I am surprised it took so long.

After watching '12 kingdoms' I have become more fascinated with Japanese supernatural beings. There seems to be a few missing on the site, I hope they add more soon!
