Movie time. And the winner is...
How many of the nominated movies have you seen, and who do you think should win?
You can answer before the awards or give an explanation why another should have won after.
Also, are you going to watch the Academy Awards?

I wasn't able to see any of the movies that got nominated. I think it's the first year that's ever happened to me.monkeyboy wrote:How many of the nominated movies have you seen, and who do you think should win?
To be honest I wasn't much into watching the Awards this year. I just didn't much get into the nominated movies this year (in the various award categories). I liked "Walked the Line", but that was about it unfortunately. It's the luck of the draw I guess that it turned out that way.monkeyboy wrote:Also, are you going to watch the Academy Awards?

Here is the televised awards list I believe:

Well I guess out of the major awards I liked Cinderella Man and Pride & Prejudice also, but that's about it. I've seen suprisingly few of the nominated award category movies this year.

I watched the awards. For the most part they were predictable.
(if you paid any attention to the precursor awards)
I was floored by Crash winning over Brokeback Mountain for best picture.
Those were the only two best picture nominees that I had a chance to see, and there was just no comparison. Brokeback should have won.
(IMHO)
To me; A great movie, besides entertaining.. should get some emotional reaction out of a person.. or make them think about it/ want to discuss it with others. I watched Crash and was like ok.. yeah, so what's the big deal?! I didn't think about it much afterwards. Brokeback Mountain made me cry at the end.. and has been a discussion piece for me and several coworkers for awhile now.
I'm not saying Crash wasn't good. It kept my attention, but I just didn't feel for any of the characters. A lot of it seemed forced. Maybe because they tried to cram too many storylines together, I don't know.. it just made no emotional impact.
Now having not seen the other three movies, I can't say that Brokeback was the best of the nominees. But still.. Constant Gardener and Hustle and Flow, which weren't even nominated.. were more emotionally involving than Crash.. sheesh.
Sorry, that was longer than intended.

To me, George Clooney was very impressive with his awards speech too!
Now I need to see The Moon and the Son: An Imagined Conversation * won Best Animated Short Film.
Time to add some other things to my Netflix list other than anime that is.
So was I! I haven't seen Crash, but its good to see Hollywood having a surprise for a change.I was floored by Crash winning over Brokeback Mountain for best picture.

I haven't seen Memoirs yet, it appears to be visually stunning.. so the wins didn't suprise me, though I was pleased for it.monkeyboy wrote:

George Clooney did make a wonderful speech. (a nice change from.. I'd like to thank "insert name") Though I was rooting for another actor.

I tend to avoid movies with a (Academy Award) hype until the whole thing dies down.
So I'll see whatever won what category in about 3 to 6 months.

The Doctor : … and then, just to finish off, I’m going to wipe every last stinking Dalek out of the sky !
Dalek : But you have no weapons ! No defenses ! No plan !
The Doctor : Yeah ! And doesn’t that scare you to death ?

While I thought Crash was the right choice for Best Picture, I was surprised it beat out Brokeback Mountain. With all the hype, I thought the voters would be swayed. Crash, to me, had a more poignant message and better performances. It was a film about race relations in modern America, and it was very well done without being overly emotional. Brokeback, to me, relied too much on emotion and not enough on evoking real thought. The only nominee I did not see was Munich.
While George Clooney was the right call, I would have liked to have seen Don Cheadle get a nomination for Crash.
For the sheer amount of work he invested in the role, I was pulling for Joaquin Phoenix as best actor. While Hoffman had Capote dead on, it was not much of a departure for him.
Murderball should have won best doc. That film held my interest much longer than March of the Tuxedos.

Somewhat predicatable--- I was ecstatic that Hustle and Flow won Best Song--- i didnt think their performance of it onstage did the version I heard in the film justice---- but I enjoyed the movie. "Socrsese 0, Three 6 mafia 1"--- ouch that was a little below the belt.
One interesting thing about Terrance Howards nomination--- something I read from another movie critic which struck me at the 11 th hour, despite the fact I knew Hoffman was going to win....
Johnny Cash, Truman Capote--- real people---- Enis Del Mar, a chracter from a short story. These people have already been "created" so to speak, so the actors that protrayed them already had something to go on.
Howard's character is not like them--- he made the character from scratch, based on how he felt this person would be (a good script helped)--- he scored his nomination without just doing an impression of someone. Somehow I felt his role deserved an oscar, despite Hoffman's really truly amazing performance, just my two cents.
I completely misjudged some of the technical categories--- didnt give Geisha enough credit. Terrance Malicks movies usually pick up Best Cinematography but i thought Brokeback was going to win.
Crash----------- on the one hand i know it didnt deserve it......... I mean LOOK at this years winners, they're more diverse than any previous Oscar awards I can recall------- Picture, Director, Actors & Actresses were all won by different films. Either no one film was really great, or there was a lot of indecision. You have to go back to 1956 to find a time when the top 4 categories didnt have at least two going to the same film. This means either Hollywood is producing more movies that contain really great diverse elements, so its harder for people to choose one that "stands above the rest" or, what I fear..... they arent producing movies that have all the right elements to make a classic, something truly memorable.
Geish and King Kong scoring 3 or 4 each, but only technical awards...
My Oscar prediction accuracy this year--- 70%. on the other hand I am happy that Haggis, a Canadian, scored..... oh well, I hope his script for the new James Bond movie is cool, he won the screenplay award too.
George Clooney---- awesome cool!
Jon Stewart---- seemed a bit nervous but did get some great laughs.
I'm rambling so Illl stop.

That George is some hero.

The Three Laws of Robotics:
1. A robot may not injure a human being, or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm.
2. A robot must obey the orders given it by human beings except where such orders would conflict with the First Law.
3. A robot must protect its own existence as long as such protection does not conflict with the First or Second Law.
