My situation is totally reverse
But here is mine
I totally HATED English when I was in Japan because memorizing words is totally boring! But when I came here I had to learn it and use it.... So I had to learn quickly and I realized I can speak Engrish
(noted with R
)
I still have trouble with accent but I can communite with people at least
Anyway I think the best way to learn is to use it not to memorize it

If you use Bittorrent then I can recommend downloading programs or video series for teaching the language. I obtained a large video series this way (even though it looks like something made over 10 years ago
) And as Kittens said learning by speaking is the best way, IMO. Try to find a program that speaks the words for you and then you can repeat afterwards. Very helpfull.
I hopefully you can find something.
