I have been a rabid Pink Floyd fan for almost 20 years. Today's news hits me hard. DW can testify to my obsession with all things Pink Floyd, from Nick Mason's excellent book, to every commercially available album, to bootleg recordings, videos, documentaries....etc. Pink Floyd songs are a large part of my own guitar playing reportoire, however badly I massacre them.
The "Wish You Were Here" album and specifically the 9 part song "Shine on you crazy diamond" were written as a tribute to Syd. He left Pink Floyd in 1968 after a mental breakdown that has been widely attributed to excessive LSD use, although David Gilmour who replaced Syd in 1968 has stated that the breakdown most likely would have happened anyway.
"Remember when you were young, you shone like the sun.
Shine on you crazy diamond.
Now there's a look in your eyes, like black holes in the sky.
Shine on you crazy diamond.
You were caught on the crossfire of childhood and stardom,
blown on the steel breeze.
Come on you target for faraway laughter,
come on you stranger, you legend, you martyr, and shine!
You reached for the secret too soon, you cried for the moon.
Shine on you crazy diamond.
Threatened by shadows at night, and exposed in the light.
Shine on you crazy diamond.
Well you wore out your welcome with random precision,
rode on the steel breeze.
Come on you raver, you seer of visions,
come on you painter, you piper, you prisoner, and shine!"
Shine on Syd....
