Is "resignation, termination and retirement" okay? Is there a retire-ation type word to use instead?

resignate, terminate, retire-ate
resign, terminate, retire
resignation, termination, retire-ation

I believe there is one, yes.

Nope, there's no retireation. Whether it's correct to use "resignation, termination and retirement" depends on the context. I can't think of an example in which it would be incorrect, but there might be a random example where using retirement like that would be incorrect.

By the way, in your first row of words, the only real word is terminate. That's because if you want to use a single word as opposed to a phrase, resign and retire only exist in the intransitive form. The transitive form would have to be something like "make him/me/them/her resign" or "force him/me/them/her to retire."

As for your second row, I'd be careful about using terminate in an intrasitive way. I'm sure it's doable, but it would just sound awkward. Just don't use it to refer to yourself unless you use it in a passive sense. i.e. "I was terminated." Then you get into passives, which most English teachers don't like very much. :P

Too much info.?

I personally like resignate. No, it's not a word... but I like the sound of it! It sounds firm and determined. I think I'll use that one next time I'm mad... "I RESIGNATE!" and then I'll storm out of the room. :)

Personally, moi, I'm resigned to the idea that many people use "not-words" so often that they enter the dictionary.

I'd love to terminate THAT practice, though.

Sorry... I think I'll just go retire to the Stupid Person Hole (tm) now.

Speaking of "non-words", I had to educate a coworker recently.

There is no such word as - Conversate

When two or more people converse, they are having a conversation.

Ok I'll stop now.
