And what' wrong with Monopoly money? When I pass Go I'm going to buy Park Lane!

I like the Australian notes, they're brightly coloured yellows, oranges, greens etc. even the UK notes are fairly nice to look at, plus they're very security laden with silver foil strips and watermarking.

In the future, maybe 10 years time, I see us using bank notes a lot less in the developed world as we'll be using credit/debit cards and mobile phones to pay for goods & services.
The 'Tuxedo' card [from Mastercard] has been advertised over here recently and you can only spend what you've paid onto it. I can see this kind of card being used a lot. Not just as a way to curb debt but as a replacement to cash.
Right now I rarely use cash as it is, I use it to buy the occasional drink at a pub or a pint of milk at the shop. That's only once a fortnight. As such I'd be happy to use an alternative payment method.

It'll be cool when we can walk into a shop and not have to carry any form of payment, we can just have our retina's scanned which will hook up to our bank accounts :^^:

Please correct me if I'm mistaken, but isn't there a payment method in Japan where your cell phone contains your CC info?

I think it was some way to wave your phone over something and it grabs the CC info for the purchase.

Maybe it was just something that was an idea and never put into practice? Does anyone here know more about this?

Yes, Ducky, there has been a system like that in some parts of the world. I think it was tested in Holland too, about 2 years ago. Some retail outlets still support payment by this method but I think it's primarily for low-value items so it's used in cafes and newsagents.
Like all new things, they need to gather momentum and become widespread before they become the norm. I don't see it happening on a wide scale for several years at least.

We have something like that. It's called GreenSpot or GreenCard.. one of the two. Of course there is a small service charge to add your money to your card.

I'm sorry, but I find that creepy! :O
I'm a stick in the mud- nice germy dollar bills for me, thanks much!

On the subject of currency- Fun facts:
  • There are 490 notes in a pound (lb.)
$1 million would weigh 2,040.8 pounds if you used only $1 bills; or 20.4 lbs using $100s- but wouldn't look as impressive. ^_^
The hands of the clock in the steeple of Independence Hall (back of $100 bill) are set at approximately 4:10.
    AND...
The biggest bill that exists is one for $100,000.
The $100,000 bill was never made available to the public, and was limited to transactions between the Treasury Department and the Federal Reserve. However, it is still legal tender, if anyone can get it!
