Your money - Due Diligence

I dont usually make these kind of posts, but I feel a sense of obligation to do so.

Long story short......

I get a call today by from both of the banks I deal with (I have a personal account and a business account). Both banks had indicated to me that my bank cards have been used in a location (2 different ones in this case) where cards were being swiped on a card reader and my account info was stolen.

My personal account bank informed me that someone tried to use a duplicate of my card this weekend at a Las Vega casino. They attempted to buy $100 worth of chips and the bank immediatly froze my account.

My business account number was stolen months ago. Fortunatly, only a small $30 purchase was charged on it at a restraunt in France in June. I told them to freeze that account. I never even noticed the charge because it was so small.

So, tomorrow I need to go to two different banks and get new pin and account #'s. As well, I will be setting up additional security to my accounts.

This sadly isn't the first time this has happened. I have also had 3 of my Credit card #'s stolen through online stores 6 years ago (their customer databases were hacked). I also have gotten 2 of my Credit Card #'s (same cards) stolen using a swiper at a restraunt 3 years ago (went to the reastraunt 2 times in a week). Again, in all these cases, fortunatly my losses were very small.

In light of this and some recent posts on beta, I would urge you all to keep close track of your finances.

It is funny that you posted this...
my fiance's card was frozen today because someone stole his information and attempted to use it on several websites. The bank froze it after $200 was spent. Scary stuff.

Having been thru the whole stolen credit card/ identity theft thing I can tell you that you can't be too vigilant or take too many precautions.

It is all one big pain in the ***

does anyone have any experience with that company called "Life Lock"?
id seen it on tv and was wondering if it was good or not. if it could really protect you as good as they say ya know?

LifeLock, they advertise it with the owner's social security number on the commercial...and then someone stole his identity with it.

They said it couldn't be done. So the theives did it.

lol, so I'd have to say no, they aren't any good. They're a scam.

most credit cards will remove charges or call you immediately when they see something wrong. Bank cards are different since it's direct to your account -- they may not monitor it like they do credit cards.

We had a problem with one of our credit cards where teh magnetic strip worked sometimes and sometimes it didn't. We were trying to get gas and the attendant swiped the card twice, because it didn't read properly the first time. The cc company froze the account since on the second swipe it said there was something wrong with the card.

Even my online account was locked out. I had to call them to reset it.

But you should always pay attention to your statements just in case there is something funny on it.

omgosh thats a riot!
i never acutally thought it was his REAL SS# he put up there!

thanks so much for letting me know! i was actually going to look into getting it as time went on but im glad i put it off so long.
