I haven't seen the ad (bloody Real Player, grrr) but from the blurb that's describing it I think it's VERY clever- The ad finishes with the message: "Don't let war affect the lives of children."

If the ad didn't have a message, I'd be pissing myself with laughter at the prospect of these character getting mutilated but in this context, it makes it very striking and serious.
For those who feel aggreived because Smurfs are being killed, they're only killing what the Smurfs represent, which is emotionally worse. Guess advertisers think we've seen too many real-life burns victims and amputees within advertising and that this method is turning us off.

The Doctor : … and then, just to finish off, I’m going to wipe every last stinking Dalek out of the sky !
Dalek : But you have no weapons ! No defenses ! No plan !
The Doctor : Yeah ! And doesn’t that scare you to death ?

And I also believe that no child should ever have to grow up with a gun in their hands, or kill someone before the age of 14, or die of Aids before the age of 20. Should we feel guilty? You bet. We might not have personally contributed to the situation, but by not doing anything we're allowing it to continue. So I suppose it depends on your definition of "actually responsible".

Well, I agree with you. The problem with this commercial is that it just makes me feel sick rather than guilt. I think it has something to do with the audio rather than the picture. /hmm A lot of charity commmercials work with shock on one level or another. But, like any campaign, they are going to alienate or offend some people. This kind of commercial just doesn't work for me. I've no doubt that it works for others. If it draws in more people (or maybe shocks them in  ) than it alienates, then it is a success.

I understood what they were trying to do. It just doesn't work for me. Sorry. My personal feeling.

More like...
Crusader Rabbit , , Hercules Hare & his Guided Muscle , Kimba the white Lion ect.... Just like me :hitting:
Never saw ANY of those... except Kimba, and that was maybe four years ago. Sorry :P Maybe it was just the market.

I suppose I could have added Yogi Bear, Woody Woodpecker, Tom & Jerry and some other classics too :) But my very favorites were Johnny Quest, Fantastic Four, and all of those opera spinoffs on Bugs. :-)

Of course. Love those red pointed hats. :^^: (If I'm not mistaken the series is Dutch, which would explain why it made up for a good part of my upbringing.)

I'm glad I have finally met someone who has seen it! I don't remember it very well, but do remember the pointed hats and David riding on some sort of animal...a fox? I can't remember!

Hm, I saw this Smurfs ad on the news and on the internet.
They say it's not meant for children and will air late at night.
Thought it was pretty hilarious looking and nearly made light
of the message they were hoping to get across. But I give them
points for creativity. I mean, it really does get your attention
and it is quite memorable.
