Song of the South dvd

I downloaded this movie a year or more ago via torrent. The quality looks like a fairly good PAL VHS rip. If you would like a copy Eddie just let me know and I'll mail it to you.

Just for the heck of it i decided to do a search on disneys website

That's pretty cool. Considering how popular Splash Mountain is, you'd think the movie would be remastered and re-released. Maybe someday, with more chronological distance from slavery and segregation.

For what it's worth, you aren't necessarily limited to watching poor quality transfers from VHS. There were quite a few Laser Disk versions sold, and you can still find some on ebay every now and then. If you live around people from an old-school anime community (from back in the early fan-sub days), it shouldn't be too difficult to find someone who can do a transfer to DVD for you. It's also easy to find the players for about $20 if you have a digital capture device yourself. Sadly, I don't think the same situation exists with Fantasia.

I didn't know there was a laser disc release. That's very interesting. I've never seen it before but it would've been nice if the bootleggers had made their copies from that source material.

Edit: Ok, did some research and it seems the laser disc is Japanese or possibly from Hong Kong. Was there ever an American or region 1 release? At least it has an English audio option. Pretty cool.

I own the laser disc version of 'Song of the South.' I got it for Christmas eons ago when I was a little kid.

My dad had to special order it from Japan. I just asked him about it and he said there's no such thing as regions on laser discs, so they'll play on any machine. The cover and everything is in kanji and it has the optional Japanese subtitles. The quality is definitely superior to others that I have seen. I hope that helps!

Ah! Great! This is very interesting.

I just had a major brain fart with that region question. I wasn't thinking.

I used to own a lot of laser discs but slowly got rid of them over the years.

lol That's okay. I honestly didn't know about the region thing either!

My dad's still hoarding his very large collection of laser discs. I think he has something like 600 of the things stored in a large cabinet.

I recall that in the early 1990s, Disney released a lot of "Sing-a-long" tapes. One of them, "Songs of the South" did feature some segments of the "Song of the South" movie on that particular tape, along with words for children to sing along to. I think that that is the last official release of anything from "Song" in the US.

I also remember seeing Song on the Disney channel way back in the days. I really enjoyed the movie too because I loved how smart Briar Rabbit was. It's sad that adults are so obsessed about the master/slave relationship and think that this is what will influence children - when I was younger, I was more interested in Briar Rabbit v. Briar Bear than whatever undertones of slavery there was.

Yeah, that sounds like what they did with Splash Mountain. They focus on the animated segments and removed any semblance to live actors. That's probably what they did with the sing-a-long tapes. I remember having some of those tapes (not SOTS in particular) and really enjoying them. I guess now they make sing-a-long CDs and possibly downloadable MP3s?

Question about the laser disc players, we had one forever and finally sold it off. Now, the $20 models you mention, do they have s-video connection? Because when I looked into getting a laser disc player again about a year ago, you could not find one with s-video for $20. The cheapest was maybe $100 and even repairing one costs too much.

But a $20 player with s-video would be fabulous!

Hmm...I'm not sure about that since I'm laser disc retarded.

But if you'd like I can ask my dad about them.

I know he's helped a couple of guys he works with get laser disc players recently.
