That house is SO charming, Nida! Good luck snagging it! Is today the day?? :)

I like a house with character... old or new. I don't really like seriously old houses, just because of the upkeep. I grew up in an old house... our street was still brick, and our basement had a coal room and the old coal furnace still. (Of course we didn't use it, but it kinda creeped me out as a kid because it was so big and, well, creepy! ;)) So I guess my vote for a house would be "old enough to have character, but not so old that it's creepy!" :D I do realize that "old" is relative on an international forum like this one... Old in the United States and old in some european countries are definitely two different things!! A 100 year old house here is OLD, but I have a friend in Scotland whose house was built in 1700! 8O I think he'd laugh at me for thinking a house built in the 1930s was old. :)

Let us know as soon as you have any news about your offer, Nida!

WOW!!!

I can't believe you can find a home that beautiful for that price still!! O_O

Older homes definitely have it over newer ones. This place was built in the 80's and is your basic put-em-up-quick plywood and cheap materials. Blugh. you CAN make something of it with a lot of elbow grease but it'll still always be a cookie cutter house.

O I just LOVE this place you're getting!! yay!

(see, thinking positive here)

P.S. Shellie, great minds... while you were writing about your creepy basement I had just removed a big blurb about the funky underpinnings of the house *I* grew up in in Maine. Definitely "different". ;)

Oh Dear!!! It is lovely!!

I think you know where I stand on this one. But only because we had the funds and the land available. Our process is going onto a year now...And I'm starting to get a little weary. But it should be fabulous when we are done.

Good luck :)

I bought my house based on location. It was within 1 mile of where I used to work. That pretty much meant that it wasn't going to be that old because nothing around here is. It was about 2 years old then..now about 10.

Good luck with the offer! Be sure to let us know how it goes.

I think any house is good. There's perks to newer/custom homes. However, I'm not fond of how new homes are built. Several things have changed for the worse in terms of how homes are built. In a lot of cases, they are simply not as sturdy. On the flip side of that, the foundations tend to be better now.

Our house was built in 1912 and has a lot of soul. Over the years, we've enhanced things about it, so it looks slightly modern from the outside (things like siding) but the inside feels very lived in. It's two stories and huge, wouldn't want to live anywhere else.

Older/Newer/Built as long it has character I will love it. If I were shown a 4000 sq ft home that was cookie cutter and a 2000 sq ft home with character both same price, I would definitely go for the smaller one.

I really like the house your going for, like tex-chan mentioned it has great curb appeal!! Best wishes on acquiring it!!

I hope it goes well for you. That looks like a beautiful home.

I will buck the trend here. For myself --- I prefer a newer home. There's a lot less trouble to upgrade the electrical, water piping etc. Here in California, the fire and earthquake codes get tougher each year. The older the building, the greater the safety risks. Fortunately, that's probably not so much of a problem in other parts of the country. Keep us updated on how it goes. It's always so exciting to get a new home.

Gorgeous house! I personally prefer newer homes. I like the more modern style and that they tend to have things like media rooms and master suites.

Thanks everyone for the feedback - its all great
viewpoints. Someone mentioned that what's old
here, is not considered old in other parts of the world,
and I can certainly see that. Oy, I can only imagine
how gorgeous some of those homes are. 8O

Also, WC, your home is quite a bit older then this
one is, actually. I'll bet its lovely and charming. 8)
And, nope - no earthquakes around here, though,
the house does seem pretty sturdy. :P

Jenn, I am sure everyone would love to be able to
build their own log home. I can;t wait to see it after
its finished. :o

As for me, I will stick with pre-WWII homes, like this
one. Oh, did I mention, she accepted my offer. :)

Thanks for all the good vibes guys!! Seems to have
worked out well for me. :o

What you said was either too simple for me.

YAY!! Congrats on getting that gorgeous "new" old home. It is so beautiful, and has so much character. I can just imagine your grandbabies running and playing and having a wonderful time in there. You'll have to share pics of the inside, once you get settled and have everything decorated just the way you like it.
