Just wanted to pipe up and say HECK YEAH! to the Dark is Rising books!
/no1

We (my husband and I both) thought immediately of them when the first Harry Potter book came out!
Awesome stuff we read and read again as kids. :D
I think we've at least two copies of the set scattered throughout the house in various boxes from various moves. :emb

And we're both unsure of the actor choices on the characters, but we don't have any say in that, and will still go see the movie regardless.

I enjoyed the movie, considering this book was my least favourite. Great action scenes, ample humour and some fantastic casting. Although I do wish they had explained a lil' more abt the Order, like elaborating on its current members etc.

My bf, who hadn't read the book, felt that there were too many gaps e.g. how ppl appeared on the battle scene juz like that. Still, it's one of those shows you gotta watch. Can't wait for the 7th book and finally getting to the ending :)

I saw @ 12am on opening day and it was very crowded - long lines and people were crazy, cheering at the screen all night. I really enjoyed it, but I agree that it was rather short. I read the fifth book almost two years ago so I kinda forgot what they left out - I felt like there was a lot missing. I do think they did a nice of of developing and representing what they did decide to keep in the movie. I read the books when they first come out and by the time their corresponding movies come out, I have forgotten a lot of story line. I am able to enjoy it all over again when I see the movie!

And I know this is off topic, but @ Harry Potter did everyone see the previews for the Golden Compass? I was blown away and I am frothing at the mouth to see it. I don't think I will be able to wait until December. I read the Dark Materials trilogy faster than I have read anything - it was so captivating. If you haven't read them yet, I am advising you to start now before the first movie comes out and everyone starts talking about it and you feel left out. I just hope the filmmakers do their job right and do not disappoint. But from the previews, it already looks amazing. :crazy

Seen it. Didn't like it.
The movie missed the spirit of the previous ones. It lacked to bring out the story in the way it was needed. And it gave the impression a number of times the both the director and sfx/set-department just phoned it in.

It's not just a bad Potter movie. It's a bad movie.

The Doctor : … and then, just to finish off, I’m going to wipe every last stinking Dalek out of the sky !
Dalek : But you have no weapons ! No defenses ! No plan !
The Doctor : Yeah ! And doesn’t that scare you to death ?

No, would you recommend it?

Yup! I got that preview. I actually got the book as a late birthday present because of it. Guess, I'll be seeing that movie too. :^^:

Carry on with your Harry Potter discussion now.
Maiko wrote:People have been saying "you've got to seperate books from movies" and that can be very true, but think about all the cases in which you yourself have been a huge fan of something, and have been very sore over film and movie treatments of some of your favorite characters and stories/comics/manga, etc.
Good point but one I've never done. My example would be the Escaflowne movie. I didn't like the movie because I didn't like the art style of the movie. I much prefer the tv series style. But that didn't stop me from buying the movie on DVD and watching it many times. I like it for what it is - another possible story. :^^:

I don't mind people comparing books and movies as long as that's not the whole discussion. In cases like LOTRs and Harry Potter, it typically is what happens. And that drives me crazy. :x

Watched it Friday. Enjoyed it a great deal. I read some of the things that were left out and a few things surprised me. It didn't hurt the film, but it was very interesting to know who sent the Dementors. The Cho girl storyline was also slightly mishandled, perhaps the DVD will expand upon this. I can't imagine them leaving this as a 2 1/2 hour movie. My guess is that the length was cut to allow more showings. 3 hour movies have a greater obstacle to overcome in the box office than 2 hour movies because they automatically have less showings allowed. If a multiplex has less theatres, they can't dedicate enough screens to show the movie every hour. All comes down to dollars.

As far as sequels this year, I liked it much better than Spider-Man 3. As far as summer movies in general go, I liked Transformers better only because it was something I'd never seen before.
