Wish I had to pay only US$6.87 a gallon. Just did the maths and here in South East England we pay the equivalent of US$7.37 a gallon (It's 90.9 pence per litre).
I can't afford a new car or a job that invloved much travelling for this reason, the costs are just too high.

Prices in Holland are steep, as is most of 'developed' Europe so I feel sorry for you too, Uende. I don't mean to insult our American friends here on Beta but it always bugs me when Americans [in general] complain about their fuel prices and cost of living; it's made worse when we hear talk of president Bush wanting to acquire Iraqi oil blah blah...
Hope you now appreciate our situation.

To follow up on Keropi's question about tax, about 70% of what we pay at the pump is tax. That is sickening.

You know, it's taken me this long to realize that you're in Amsterdam. lol Yes, I'm a little slow. Lovely city, but man... $6-some/gallon...??? That is crazy. I guess we shouldn't complain about $2.50/gallon, huh?

It seems beautiful to me too.

Dah-yum! $6 plus a gallon! I guess California isn't the gas gouger I thought it was.

Wendy, if it wasn't illegal, I would sell you some gas, pay for the shipping myself and still make a profit.

Maybe you should consider spending more time wtih us state-side. Gas is cheaper. ;)

That is absolutely ridiculous. Although that 70% tax would get me annoyed.

*Ahem* Yeah, I own one of those gas guzzlers... my big ol' Dodge truck... although now that it's a few years old it gets a whopping 13 miles a gallon....

I can't blame everything on the government, though- it's absolutely stupid that we don't have better options for hybrids or electric cars. The car companies have to get off their tuckuses and get going- I have to think that there would be more money to be made than staying in the proverbial bed with the oil companies....

I always thougt the E stood for "Eeeeeh.... there's a still enough"

And yes... all the horror stories about gasoline here are true... we're one step away from Mad Max scenarios.

Three times a month X| Eep!

It's a 1993 Volvo 440 sedan and it could be a little less thirsty but I guess it's okay.
Now see, that's where it evens out. I fill mine up about that many time a WEEK. So, in actuality, we're pretty much all paying the same. *sighs*

Ahem . . .

klet does not own a car

klet rides a bike everywhere

klet's work pays her two dollars everytime she rides her bike to work

but klet is still fat :l

Now that I have that off of my chest . . . The reason our gas prices are so low is because our country controls most of the world's gasoline--and I don't mean that we are producing gasoline. X|

Actually, I think Arizona's gas prices might be about $0.20-$0.50 lower than what you guys are naming . . . But, we have no reliable public transportation, so I'm sure that our state government puts more money into subsidizing prices. :shrug No subways/trains to maintain. Just miles and miles of concrete as we slowly build an oven around ourselves. :bawl

But as far as more efficient cars go, from what I've heard, there was a man who created an engine that got outstanding gas mileage--something like four times better than the norm . . . but he sold out to the gasoline industry, and there's obviously no way that they will ever put more efficient engines on the market. Just something I heard from a government teacher. :run

Well... not that this has anything to do with the price of gas but you've just given me inspiration for not killing myself too badly on my bike. ("Klet says I'll still be fat!") :D Yep, that's the ticket!

Yes'm, back up yonder when I was meekly offering the notion that there are more efficient technologies to be had that's kinda what I was getting at. The government doesn't MAKE them, but they also don't offer incentives for making them (at least not good ones) or penalties to the guzzler-makers. There's been the ability to produce 100-mpg cars for decades. (Like, ever since those fun days in the '70's when the lines to get gas were as long as the lines to get into Anime Expo! :P)

Gosh here I go sounding like a knee-jerk liberal again (which I am) but it makes me feel SO bad to hear about these prices everyone else is having to pay. Even my 74 year old Korean-era veteran, much much much more conservative than I am-Dad is disgusted. So. ... maybe my knee isn't jerking as badly as I thought.
