Don't worry I will remember it.

The Three Laws of Robotics:
1. A robot may not injure a human being, or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm.
2. A robot must obey the orders given it by human beings except where such orders would conflict with the First Law.
3. A robot must protect its own existence as long as such protection does not conflict with the First or Second Law.

I am not trying to say that we should not be doing as much as we can to stop screwing up our planet, but I am frustrated with everyone's adjenda items being presented as incontravertable facts.
Katrina did not make landfall as a category five and Rita probably won't either. There is enough cooler water near the shore that it will be lessening before it hits. (Not that it won't be powerful) I hope Beaumont drains well, everyone gets out safely, and the refineries are all on the west side of the eye.

Me too. I've spent the last what, eight years or so being labelled as some kind of EVIL BEING because I do not agree with the religious right's viewpoints. Notice I say the religious right. There are a lot of things the right wingers stand for in other arenas that I think are perfectly legitimate and with which I agree. I just am bloody well fed up with being pelted with pejorative comments aimed at the "liberals" for having a working brain that occasionally differs...glorff wrote:I am not trying to say that we should not be doing as much as we can to stop screwing up our planet, but I am frustrated with everyone's adjenda items being presented as incontravertable facts.
Global warming isn't "someone's agenda," it is a natural phenomenon which has been measured. Our contribution to it is also a fact -- it's the degree of that contribution which is undetermined. Whether or not it's on someone's political agenda doesn't change the situation that we MUST deal with, which is this: during our lifetimes, and our children's, the ice caps continue to melt, and the sea levels will continue to rise.
And if we continue to put multi-billion dollar complexes twenty feet from the ocean we are all congenital idiots. Or worse.
Oh yeah, and if we kill off all the trees we eventually will run out of oxygen. That's just a fun thing to consider.
That's where Shampoo's original statement comes from, I'd be willing to bet. The frustration over people in power being more concerned about finances than long-term survival. That's a documented fact, as well.

This thread started off with just a question about possible problems with evacuation preparations and to see who else was affected.
Personally, I'm getting a little tired of seeing politics getting thrown into non-political topics. I don't mind a political discussion. Heck, I was raised in a household with a Democrat father and a Republican mother. I enjoy a good debate, but maybe a separate thread would be more appropriate. That way we can stay on topic better and those who are not interested can skip the thread if they want.

Hi Folks. It just so happens I live less than 15 minutes from Beaumont. I live in Vidor, TX. That stupid hurricane is headed straight for us. Look at this below to see where we're at:
http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b89/b ... mehurr.jpg
My family does not have anywhere to go up north... uhm, we were planning on going to the lake but now Jasper is also expected to get hurricane force winds up to 100 mph and sustained at around 70.
My family currently wants to go to the shleter at the hospital... which is IN Beaumont, btw. I'm kinda nervous about the whole thing and just thought I'd let you guys know I happen to be in the heart of the .... dead zone i guess you could call it, lol... if your thinking dbz like I always do.
Maybe that's not such a good name afterall. lol.
But anyway, doesn't look like I can take my cels with me... if I did they'd just be sitting in the car. I hate to think they'll get destroyed... I just spent a ton of money buying like 10 new cels or so to update with.
Don't know where we can put our pet dog either. Traffic is moving at like 1 mph around here on I-10 towards Lousiana. Still pretty slow on roads headed North. One of the news casters was showing how he could walk faster than the traffic at around 3 mph.
All the gas stations are out of gas... town is deserted. I'm kind of freaked out because I thought we were leaving town but now we're going to be staying right here... only like 60-100 miles from the Coast. That's still gonna have some hurricane force winds. Eeek.
We were planning on leaving tonight but I don't know what my family wants to do now. I don't think they really have a plan.
I'll update you guys on what happens next chance I get.
See ya!

Woah!
Can't you go anywhere West?
One of my best friend's little brothers is in Beaumont. At least you're not right ON the coast. I know plenty of people who have ridden out force 3 and 4 and were fine. I've sat through several tropical storms with gusts as high as a three and the worst that has happened was a roof leak.
Double bag your cel books in trash bags and put them on a high place in your closet. Is there a hotel that is acting as a shelter as well? I know that a hotel is more likely to allow your dog to come with you (several hotel shelters during Katrina allowed pets).
If you can't board up your windows, at least tape them (put a large X across them) to prevent glass from flying everywhere. If you go to a shelter, take pillows, blankets and anything else you would take if camping. And fully charge your cel phones before you go.
Also, and I am speaking from experience here, remember to pack deoderant and more than four pairs of underwear...just in case.
GOOD LUCK!!!!!!

Thanks Lynxa.... we're leaving tomorrow for the Hospital and we boarded up the windows with some plywood we found in the shed. I don't think any hotels are doing shelter around here... our plan is to leave our dog inside at home.
I believe we can't go west because now it's a mandatory evacuation and we have to follow those Evac. routes. However, my brother's wife left at 11:00 am this morning and she has gone basically 30 miles, maybe. Traffic is horrible, people are running out of gas. One lady on the news only drove 6.8 miles in 4 1/2 hours and another group of people drove 33 miles in 11 hours. 3 miles an hour!! Glad I'm not on the road right now.
I'm confident now that the house will probably hold up... the roof... i dunno... it's a metal roof. It might not.
But we're going to the hospital where my brother is at. Apparently some of the staff get rooms for the families there and since his wife is trying to get out of Texas all together (heading for Oklahoma) we're going to stay there. The hospital is built to withstand up to category 3 hurricanes, but it has an underground shelter as well.
Anyway, thanks everyone... hopefully it won't be too bad.

Lordy.
What they all said. I sure hope the thing fizzles even more before heading ashore.
Be safe.
And like Lynxa said, take lots of pantsu with you :/
