Here's the other super non-geek person speaking up...
My new machine (ok, it's a year and a quarter old. Probably makes it a dinosaur) is a HP. I've had absolutely ZERO problems with it, and I push the thing awfully hard. I'm kind of surprised I haven't toasted the CD burner by now or something.
I'd probably be happier with a little more ram, but hey.
The only reason I am even sticking my toe into this particular pond is that the Spouzal Unit (tm) *is* a tear-apart-the-machine-and-rewire-it kind of guy, and he decided on this one for me. And it was not expensive at all.
I thought those two prices you linked to up above were kind of... pricey.

I like computers. It seemed like expensive at all.

The Three Laws of Robotics:
1. A robot may not injure a human being, or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm.
2. A robot must obey the orders given it by human beings except where such orders would conflict with the First Law.
3. A robot must protect its own existence as long as such protection does not conflict with the First or Second Law.

I think I do.

For what it's worth I'll add my two yen.
Dell seems to be pretty reliable. The local library just replaced all their old Dells with new ones. You know how (city) government is about spending other peoples' money, right?
Seems to me that you used to be able to go to Dell's site and (semi) custom configure your computer. Probably wouldn't be any more expensive than the ones you were looking at. I have a 10 (or is it 11?) year old Dell that is still working perfectly. Though I mostly use it for email, LJ, and the scanner.
Gee, I wonder why nobody mentioned Apple?
Okay, I mostly use a Mac now and haven't had any problems (except with IE of course!). I did have to replace the HD (it ate itself
) but since it was given to me I can't really complain about that.

I didn't buy a Mac because I just didn't have the $$- BUT I will say that they are wonderful computers. If you are doing anything graphics-intensive, they are incredible! I love playing with them at the Mac store, too!

I could be. Yes I have an encyclopedic mind.

People already don't know there was such an animal as "Apple" without the Mac part. >.>
Apple ][ for the win!

Ahh... Macintosh.. I was hopin' no one would bring them up. lol.. sorry folks, I'm not a big fan of Macs, but I will say this--the G5 is pretty nice. But, anything less than that is worthless as far as Macs go, IMO. (I really really despise the IMac)

You can download ALICE for MacIntosh, because it runs in Java.

Interesting reason. Are you looking for a MacIntosh he or she will not be needing to download?

There is so much to think about, I'm getting a bit dizzy @_@. So far, it looks like I am getting a dell...I think?!? But I keep reading reviews about how horrible their service are
(I never considered getting a MAC, too many horrible stories about them.
)
Once again, thank you everyone for all your input, keep them coming, I'm still deciding.
