Okay, this isn't for me, it's for my best friend who is in SERIOUS need of getting his computer back on track. Windows Explorer won't load (Windows loads, just not Windows Explorer - so pretty much all he gets is the wallpaper). He can't boot up in Safe Mode either and can't figure out how to run a scandisk (not even in DOS).
Any suggestions? Pleeeeeeeeaaaaaase? How to get scandisk to run in DOS would be an excellent start.
Not sure if this will help or not, but here is my attempt at helping
If you can see the wallpaper in windows XP, but explorer is not running you might be able to manually start it.
Press CTRL ALT DEL and go to the APPLICATIONS TAB and click on the NEW TASK button at the bottom. When the new task box appears, type in explorer.exe and hopefully explorer will start.
To run scandisk from dos, it should be SCANDISK C:
(not sure if this will work if the hard drive is formatted with NTFS)

The hard drive began to make a funny sound as one bad sector after another appeared. Then another, and another, till the little AI bot's programming was being lost to the eminent hard drive failure.
