I am a Japanese and for me New year is sooooooooooooooooooooo special. In Japan it is like Christmas (and Christmas is a day for a party!!!) so in New Year, everyone spends time with their family, etc etc. I just loooooooooooove going to a shinto temple or a budda temple for New Year!

Unfortunately since I came to the US I have not spent a traditional Japanese New Year. So I totally miss it :( :( Someday I would like to go back during New year and have Osechi Ryori :D :D (and a lot of Mochi :) :) )

Christmas!!! Presents, family, no school . . . what's not to love?

Plus, for the past year, the only time my parents buy me clothes is at Christmas. So, that's the only time I get clothes, 'cuz it's not like I'm going to buy them myself. :P I'm cheap, and I hate clothes shopping. I don't even really like clothes browsing.

But my Japanese teacher told us that in Japan, Christmas is date holiday and an excuse to eat cake. :D Personally, I don't need an excuse . . .

For me it has to be Christmas. It's really not about the presents but is a festive, happy day in general for me. Plus I love decorating the tree and hanging up the garlands in the living room. n.n I usually get a buzz leading up to Christmas with all that stuff around me. Not to mention Christmas dinner is always good. Although we very rarely have Turkey, more like a nice joint of lamb or beef.

I was going to be a twerp and say Yom Kippur :P (Because almost all of the holidays up there are just Christian ones). But I'm neither, so....

Hmmm. I used to love all that is Christmas, but I'm tired of working my buns off for weeks beforehand while trying to do classwork. It also makes me sad now because it was my mom's big thing, and it's not the same without her. (Yes, I do still love it, but it's bittersweet).

So, I put "other." Give me anything between Valentine's Day and Easter. Saint Patty's Day works. I love spring because it means rebirth, renewal, a fresh start... :D No matter how ancient the religion or the name of the main character in the story you choose to follow, spring has always been about rebirth. I love. :)

LOL :crackup I was thinking the same thing but I guess I'll be honest, not that I'm trying to buck the trend, put a downer on things or appear like a grumpy sod.

I personally dislike all public holidays, it's only nice for having a day or two off work. My reasons? Ok, I might say 'Christmas' is my fave but there are a lot of negative points to it.
1. "Christmas is meant to be spent with family". I have a very small family and live with most of them already so it's nothing 'special'. I don't really know/talk to family members outside my household so I don't miss them or care what they get up to. If there were some young kids around it'd be a different story.
2. "You can have a party". I don't use a public holiday as an excuse to have a good time, I enjoy socialising throughout the year. Public holidays are worse if you go out because of the damn 'Christmas Drinkers', people who can't hold their drink and stumble along swearing, getting in the way, acting like prats or trying to abuse you verbally or physically.

I needn't go on, I'm sure you get the picture.

Please note, this post has been injected with a heavy dose of dry humour
