Shinsen-Subs website shutdown

Post by kymaera »

Funimation recently informed fansub group Shinsen-Subs, "We own or control various exclusive copyrights and trademarks related to the animated motion pictures, including but not limited to, the series known as “Speed Grapher,” “Trinity Blood,” “FullMetal Alchemist,” “Dragon Ball,” “Solty Rei” a.k.a. “Origin,” “Detective Conan” a.k.a. “Case Closed,” and “Tsubasa”." This was after Funimation had contacted the registrar for Shinsen-subs domain name, resulting in the registrar, Joker.com, freezing the domain name. Solty Rei and Tsubasa have not yet been announced for release by Funimation.

Well . . . yes and no.

Yes in that those series might get a domestic release.

No in that sometimes companies buy the rights and never release, and in that if they do release, it might be over a year before we see the first volume.

I'm not here . . . I'm working on my paper . . . I swear . . .

It could be considered good + bad like Klet said:

Good:
The group fansubs a bunch of anime that may never get here in the states.

Bad:
They can take money away from the Domestic release companies.

Personally I am not a fan of companies shutting down fansub groups. Without fansub groups there is a good chance I would have no interest in anime at all and would probably not be around here to post replies like this.

We have talked about the whole supporting fansub groups thing on here before. I cannot speak for everybody but I tend to purchase things like music and videos based on how much I enjoy them the first time around - be it in the format of a downloaded mp3 or avi file. I guess the digital age we have evolved into has changed my once impulse buy-anything-with-a-pretty-cover type of mentality. 8)

On a sort of off-topic note, Naruto vol. 1 comes out on DVD on March 28 and if it includes a Japanese dub, will be joining my DVD collection. (The FMA DVDs are nice too) :)

It's bad news for me in that Shinsen Subs does some of the best work on several shows I've been following. Sheesh.

Soon we won't be able to pee without someone charging us for it. Oh, I know, I'll write a musical about that and call it "Urinetown." There. Someone shut me down because I mentioned a copyrighted work.

Yeah, yeah, I know. I'm evil. Spank me.

Is this a "yes or no" question?

Shinsen Subs is back up but they removed the series that Funmation listed to them. They also started to fansub Jigoku Shoujo, which is good for me since Ayu's fansubs wouldn't download for me.

I agree that Shinsen-Subs does very good work, I prefer their subs over just about anyone -- but I will almost guarantee that SOMEONE will fansub whatever they dropped.
