I could cry, but...
Then I think of his work and I start laughing my ass off. What a genius. He'll be missed.

He was hillarious. I didn't know he died that day, I was in Las Vegas at the time. It's a shame that for so many years he wasn't able to really, truly be himself.

Not meaning to mock your heartfelt comment above NSP, but I don't think he will be missed among the vast majority of people. Since he hasn't done much work for 15 years he wasn't in the minds of people and kids don't know who he is anyway.
Don't get me wrong, in his day he was a great comedian and I love the movies he starred in with Gene Wilder, not forgetting Superman as well
Sometimes people are 'bigged up' more than is necesary. George Best for example, who took up the headlines SO much in recent weeks when he died. I just can't see why anyone would be upset to see a man like him pass away- a wife-beating drug addict who kicked a ball around a field 35 years ago.
Anyway, RIP Richard Pryor.

He was indeed one of the great trailblazers in comedy. RIP.

The Doctor : … and then, just to finish off, I’m going to wipe every last stinking Dalek out of the sky !
Dalek : But you have no weapons ! No defenses ! No plan !
The Doctor : Yeah ! And doesn’t that scare you to death ?

""? Is sad?

The Three Laws of Robotics:
1. A robot may not injure a human being, or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm.
2. A robot must obey the orders given it by human beings except where such orders would conflict with the First Law.
3. A robot must protect its own existence as long as such protection does not conflict with the First or Second Law.

As someone who works with kids on daily basis, I can tell you that they do know who Richard Pryor is. Just because he hasn't done stand up in fifteen years doesn't mean he is forgotten. I hear kids talk about Stir Crazy, Harlem Nights, and Silver Streak quite often. I don't think his accomplishments are "bigged up" by any means. You can't get through a modern comedian's act without hearing something they took from Pryor. I think comparing him to George Best is a stretch as well. Pryor had his problems, but cleaned up his act in short order. He may have gotten drunk and killed his car once, but that's about it. He was recently named the greatest comedian of all time. He was definitely not forgotten, because his movies and concerts are out there for every generation to see.Krafty wrote:Not meaning to mock your heartfelt comment above NSP, but I don't think he will be missed among the vast majority of people.

Oh, I have to agree with Brian. Pryor was a comedian among comedians. Had it not been for his work there would have been no Murphy, no Rock (and I've heard both of these people attribute their initial interest in comedy to him. So I think you can safely say he was FAR from "forgotten.). . . he's a classic. And I'm quite certain many, many young people are aware of this.

Just so you know, I didn't make a generic post just because he died. I own vinyl records of his earlier stand up acts, I also own early George Carlin and Bill Cosby vinyl as well. As much of a young'n you think me to be, I am well cultured in older comedy. Brewster's Millions was one of my childhood favorites and I've always liked The Toy to boot.
Younger generations may or may not have a true appreciation for who he was or what he did, but I appreciated him enough to at least miss him now that he's gone.

You can forget what I said earlier, I don't mean to offend anyone. I tend to analyse things/situations and I know that my views can often seem insensitive, especially when it comes across in this written medium.
Out of the gloom a voice said unto me;
"Smile and be happy, things could be worse".
So I smiled and was happy
and behold;
things did get worse...
