living and working in Japan...

Post by xKAKASHIx »

For those of you that may not know I have just applied to teach english in Japan...if things go well I hope to be there in late summer early fall, for a year or so.

I wonder if anyone had any suggestions on a location, i can try to request a city or area to live in (thats if i get the job), I was thinking Tokyo...not necessarily down town but like Chiba area (I have a friend there now) or on the outskirts of dowtown tokyo.

I only wanted to go there because it might be easier to adapt to, seeing its prolly more touristy and might be more accepting of foreigners and more commercialized and have more english speaking people and what not (im not fluent in japanese at all). But i was wondering if anyone had any suggestions and could help me out...it would be much appreciated.

I was in Tokyo for a week last month for a week, and while it was fun to visit, there are SO many people. Commuting anywhere was a real hassle. There are certainly a lot of things to do in Tokyo and people being a foreigner is a lot easier there as people in Tokyo are used to foreigners and most signs (important ones anyway) are also in English, but I really prefer the Kansi region (Kyoto, Osaka) to the Tokyo area. Nagoya is nice too but I haven't really explored it all that much. Kyoto is a great city with a lot of cool places to go, and just 30 minutes away is Osaka, which is kind of like a scaled down version of Tokyo, just as hip but with less people. Just my $.02. :)

Further away from Tokyo, the nicer the people. Hokkaido for me.
