Autographs

Post by Okuni »

H'okay!
So, next week is Anime Boston; with Greg Ayres, Vic Mignogna, etc. & all.

My question is: Would an autograph add or take away value from an original production sketch?
I'm pretty sure it would add value to a fan cel, though.
here's the two pieces I'm definitely with me to the con:

For Greg (best shot I have-no pun intended!)

For Vic

(even though he does Kougaiji's voice as well.)

I was wondering if I should have the original of Goku signed or a copy.
What is the opinion of the Beta seniority? Or anyone's opinion?

Thanks for the help! :D

I am in the opinion that it detracts from an actual cels value. There are a lot of folks who don't like the English VA's or who feel that anyone's signature (well, maybe other than the show's creator) would detract from its orignal value.

My suggestion is to find a clear piece of acetate and have them sign that and then you can showcase it with the cel without affecting the value.

hmm, for sketches and for fancels... I donno, honestly :) Fancels, since I don't know how much of a resale market there is, probably wouldn't hurt too much on the value (but I'd still go for the acetate).

Sketches... shrug :)

Autograph's are pretty much a hit or miss. Some will think it adds to the
value, others will think it detracts. I think that having a American voice
actor or other person associated with the show would tend to devalue it more
than not, but that's my own personal bias.

Usually I don’t think autographs adversely affect a cel’s value.
I think it would only lessen the value if whoever is signing it decided to sign diagonally across the entire image.

I got a “Cybernetics Guardian/Cyguard” cel signed by Koichi Ohata at PMX and I think it’s great.

Some might think I killed the cel, but this cel has more hits than any of my other “Cybernetics Guardian” cels. It’s signed directly on the cel and I don’t think it destroys the value of the image.

Since you’re talking about a sketch I think it would only add to the value. Usually drawings have correction information written on them anyway, why would someone’s name suddenly make it worthless? I might be afraid that the markers would bleed strangely on the paper. If you’re afraid that they’ll damage the image do what “buma” says and buy a sheet of Acetate, or Mylar.

My personal opinion is that it would make the sketch less popular if it's signed by an English voice actor and would generally decrease its value (at least, to me). I tend to think it would have more worldwide appeal if it's unsigned or signed by the Japanese VA/creator/designer and thus have greater value.

Of course, if you decided to sell it on to other Western collectors, they may think differently but, I personally wouldn't get anything production signed by an English VA.

Thanks for the input everyone! :) :)

unfortunately, my cousin and I stayed only for a short time because lack of sleep the night before made us feel absolutely horrid. I stopped by the dealer room really quick and we got the layout of the place and that was about it.
I did manage to snag some nice cosplayer pics, though! :D
I'll try to have them posted (RS photo album) by the beginning of the week.

I would have used the acetate overlay method. That can be found at any craft store, right?
