LOL Duotrouble, I'm actually opposite of you. I voted preferred to be called "nerd." I'm used to it actually...I know I am.
Graduated from a tech school and I'm in a "nerd" field LOL. But for some reason, the word "geek" has always had a negative ring to it, at least for me. I don't know...everytime I picture "geek," I think oversized 2-inch-thick reading glasses, suspenders Urkle-style (don't remember how to spell his name! ) and calf-high socks...
Maybe I'm backwards LOL...but I feel like I fit the nerd description better. When I think geek, I think Star Trek.

The Three Laws of Robotics:
1. A robot may not injure a human being, or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm.
2. A robot must obey the orders given it by human beings except where such orders would conflict with the First Law.
3. A robot must protect its own existence as long as such protection does not conflict with the First or Second Law.
-I, Robot (Asimov)
I picked nerd, because to me a nerd is someone who is intellectually apt, but tends to fail in social situations and/or is singly obsessed with a hobby.
Whereas to me, a geek is just an average person with waay too much time to devote to something that does not contribute to the advancement of mankind. Also, I looked up the definition of a geek and one of the definitions was as follows: "a carnival performer who performs sensationally morbid or disgusting acts, as biting off the head of a live chicken." Ick...soooo yeah. Nerd it is.

That's too funny! That's what I think in reverse basically. I see nerds as those people who are always studying (nose in a book or computer) but are terrible when it comes to interacting with people in real life. I see geeks as those people who are your normal average people who become rabid fans of something but they can still communicate with other people. Both groups are can be intelligent because to me it's all about how you deal with others.
Confusedmoogle summed it up best for me. She is a nerd! She looked it up in a dictionary.
*hugs confusedmoogle*
BTW, I love Star Trek!
<--needs the t-shirt that reads "I'm such a geek . . . and loves it!"
My friends and I had this convo a couple months ago. Geek all the way! I think of a nerd as someone who has their nose in the book and always studying. A geek is someone who is a bit pressed for their hobby/interest. Hence why you can be all geeked up over something.
I feel as though I've progressed from being a nerd to a geek as I've gotten older.
Duo, you are SUCH a geek!! I've always liked that about you! Probably because it takes one to know one. It's funny... I wear my "geek" badge with pride, but I don't particularly like being called a nerd. Never thought about some people actually preferring the term nerd! Very interesting! (And my non-geeky friends would say I'm such a geek for thinking that is interesting!
im a geek on the inside and a rockstar on the outside

LMAO!!!! I totally had it backwards all my life then! Hehehe...I'm totally a person who can be addicted to one (or a few things), but still very sociable and love going out and stuff. Ah well, maybe I am a true geek at heart, but I still like the word 'nerdface' as I'm so called sometimes by my friends.

I think nerds, by definition, are supposed to be smart. So I would have to say I'm a geek. I think my interests in films and art make me a little geeky indeed.
I totally dig a lot of the things on www.ThinkGeek.com (I wonder if the USB George Forman grill is still there. Now that was cool! Ever wanted to have your computer do the cooking for you?)
In my opinion the difference between a nerd and a geek is purely about the ability or desire (either one) to interact with others in a social environment. I don't believe that intelligence really has that much to do with it. I think both can be smart, but I also think that it is not always the case.
From the answers so far, it seems to be a common idea that Nerds aren't socially adept or inclined.
Oh I also like the term "geekgasm".
And what about the dorks? That's what I call J all the time. He really acts like a dork.
