Your favorite non-anime Japanese show

Post by kittens »

Maybe I asked it before (but I do not remember..... /swt) but lately I am so into watching "trivia no izumi" (spring of trivia) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hey!_Spring_of_Trivia
I rent DVDs from a close by Japanese store :) :)

What is yours?

The only japanese shows I've had a chance to see on american tv and loved
are MXC (Most Xtreme Challenge) and Ninja Warrior. Of course they are
dubbed over. :P

Now, I did get to see season one and season two of Hana Yori Dango live
action TV series fansubbed and loved it! There is another live action show I'm
gonna try watching called Hanazakari no Kimi Tachi. I think it's supposed to
resemble HanaDan. We'll see.

I haven't been keeping up with much lately, but I've been a big fan of Mito Komon since I got to watch the old episodes from the 1960's on a local TV channel in Kochi. Much better than the newer versions. Yashichi rocked!

I also liked variety programs like the Warau Inu no ** series, Gakko e Ikou, and Tetsuwan DASH (especially the DASH-mura episodes). And I used to LOVE Dochi no Ryori Show. I also like the other Toei jidai-geki programs like Toyama no Kin-san and Zenigata Heiji. Oh! And I used to love watching Hamideka and Hagure Keiji Junjoha (which I know ended a couple of years ago).

edit: Oh yeah, and Ai-nori! How could I forget! I'm amazed the concept hasn't been brought over to the US yet. It would seem a natural for the US reality TV market.

Don't tempt me into going back to rent videos from the Japanese video store again. I never return them on time! :D

My all-time favorite Japanese show was IRON CHEF. I used to watch it religiously because second to my passion of all things Anime/Japanese I love cooking. They've since stop showing it to show this horrible bastardization called Iron Chef America. In my opinion its absolutely horrible. The chef's are nowhere close to being on the same level with the original Iron Chef's (except maybe Morimoto who isn't on there much), and the theme ingredients pale in comparison to those of the original show. I could go on and on about why it doesn't compare, but that's not what this thread is about. Other than that MXC and Ninja Warrior, I haven't seen much else. I do on the other hand watch a lot of Japanese movies, and my girlfriend and I are particularly fond of period samurai/drama films of which I can't remember a single title. There's a topic for another thread right there, I'll have to post that when I remember my picks :D

Non-anime huh? Slap some Shinsengumi in the title and I'm bound to like it! My favorite one though is Mibugishiden followed by NHK Taiga drama "Shinsengumi". I'm actually waiting for that new drama this August, I forgot the name but it's Shinsengumi related by Jiro Asada (hope I got the name right) who wrote Mibugishiden

I dont have T.V. at all and stuff so we usually rent movies.

I would have to say my favorite asian movie, (since we watch all types not just japanese) is "H".

Such a cool movie. I'd recommend it to anyone who likes thrillers 8)

I have to say that Iron Chef is about the only other Japanese show that I've really watched.
(That has largely to do with the fact that Food Network is about the only channel that I watch. With AS being one of the only exceptions on occasion.)
