If anyone remembers in my sale message, I posted about a flood that hit my town.... and I took some photos of the event, and posted them to a flickr account, and I thought I'd share with you all.
All these pictures are from my neighborhood around where I live, but yeah. Photos can't really do justice to being there and the event. I was evacuated from my home, by a boat b/c boats, and a handful of front loaders, were the only way to get around the streets of town. The most heart breaking was the immediate aftermath of what happened, which I wasn't able to get photos of. The heart break of seeing piles of personal belongings, (clothes, shoes, toys, furniture) stacked 4-5 feet along the sides of the road to be taken and thrown away. This is a very very small, not very rich town of about 4400 people, and the shelters were housing 500-600 people, with more people, out of their homes and staying with family/friends elsewhere. Unless you've been through it, its really hard to imagine it all. The sights, the smell, the heartache of everything. But with out any more blah blah on my part...

*please keep in mind that most of these photos were taken at least 12hrs before the water finally crested/stopped rising.

Yes I think there are.

The Three Laws of Robotics:
1. A robot may not injure a human being, or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm.
2. A robot must obey the orders given it by human beings except where such orders would conflict with the First Law.
3. A robot must protect its own existence as long as such protection does not conflict with the First or Second Law.

FEMA and the Red Cross will be here here until the end of November I think. Also Jobs and Family services are helping out where ever they can.
From my understanding the flood occurred for several reasons, one being that the day before we had TONS of water (I don't remember the # of inches, but it was a crazy ammount.... we had heavy thunderstorm like rain for all of Monday). Another reason the flood occurred was b/c the river's banks have pretty much eroded away, not leaving much to keep the rising waters contained... and there's no type of flood wall. And another reason for the floods is that the town I live in, is in sort of a valley between two other towns that had also gotten a TON of water and flooding... and since their water needed a place to go, it ended up in my small town. >_<
I'm unsure of any preventative measures that are being taken to prevent this from happening again... knowing the people in charge, probably not much, considering the last time water was this bad was in 1913... they probably figure "if it only happens once every 100yrs... why bother" There are rumor going around like "if your house had to be torn down, you can't rebuild in the same spot" but i can't imagine thats really true.
When rescued... all they allowed you to bring with you, sadly, was a purse or small bag that had a change of clothes and medicines. They didn't even let me take my cats along with me... so they got several bowls of food and water left on the floor... and that was it. I couldn't go back to get them for 5 days.
I live in the upstairs apartment so all my belongings, minus a pair of shoes and the clothes I went photographing in.... are perfectly safe. I can't say the same for the girl downstairs, who pretty much lost about 80-90% of what she owned. We got stuff up, but the water got so much higher than anyone could have imagined. She's living in a temp apartment until at least December. I know at least 2 people at work, whose homes had to be torn down, b/c there was no saving them.. one person had 3-4 inch cracks in their foundation. Such a heartbreaking tragedy.
