Should we get our other halves into collecting?

Post by miz ducky »

I want to know what you think about getting your significant other or spouse into the hobby.

I'm inclined to say that I would rather not have this hobby in common with a spouse. For the reason, that we might end up very broke if we're both into collecting. :hurt:

On the other hand, if we get them into the hobby, would they then be more accepting of the obsession?

I disagree since my wife has enjoyed our shared hobby quite a bit.

Finding someone who understands and shares the excitment of a new series or a new find makes it much more fun.

Also you don't get the "You spent how much on that" or having the "look" when your explaining your hobby to a mutual friend or relative.

I do feel that involving a loved one gives you something to talk about and enjoy and I can attest that having good comunication is a must for a long term relationship to work , for us it will 29 years next month.

Very, very good point.
Leave it to JWR to be the voice of reason.

Any one else have an opinion on the matter?

No I don't think there are any.

My other half already has coin collecting and restoration of classic Mopars (Dodge cars) as a hobby. He has no desire to understand my obsession. He has left that to our 2 daughters. They actually are the reason I got started with anime in the first place. It was a great way to keep connected during their teenage years and still works years later.

I love being able to share cel collecting with my girlfriend! We bought our first two pieces of animation art together and are working on expanding our own collections together. I agree w/ JWR that it keeps the lines of communication open; it adds a little something extra to the typical "How was your day?". Now sure a breakup would tear both collections apart, but too large an in-tandem collection may be incentive for them to stay as one. :D

:vict Also, congrats JWR on 29 years that's something very special you and and your wife share!

I wish my husband was into collecting! He's not into anime, art.... we actually don't share any hobbies! It would be nice not to have to explain why a cel costs so much, and actually have him share my excitment when I get a new piece of artwork. :bawl

That's why I joined RS & Beta! It's nice to chat with people who appreciate the beauty of anime artwork. /no1

I don't have a SO, but if I did, at the very least I'd want him to be understanding. That way I could possibly get some cels from birthdays and holidays ;) As it is, I can't get family and friends to buy me anything hobby related. They claim what I like is "too hard to find" so anything like anime, cels, etc. I have to save for and buy on my own :/

my boyfriend is obsessed with electronics and computers. :D He does not collect alot of stuff so him collecting cels is out of the question. ~_~ He is not mean or gets angry about my hobby though. HAHA He says as long as I can spend $500 on one cel; I can not complain when he spends that much on computer junk. it works. :D He does buy me cel related stuff though as gifts. For christmas I got a ton of cel bags and other stuff. ^__^

My boyfriend doesn't understand my obsession. XD But he doesn't stop me from collecting, either. We're both into anime, manga and video games, so I can't ask for anything more than that. ^_^

Not that I buy much anyways these days, lol.

Relations depend on trust and amount of time you spend together...

I think that sharing an obsession would be awesome... because you'll be spending more time together and talking and obsessing about the same things. Image

That's a big problem... money. Breaks alot of relationships when you don't have enough or don't agree on how it's spent.

To solve the problem!
1. Marry a rich Sugar Daddy! Image
2. Win the Lottery
3. Get a higher paying job!

I'm thinking of doing the 3rd option. How about you? Image
