They've released the 50th anniversary edition of this film on DVD today. If you are a movie buff, and you have not seen this film, you must. It is one of the best character studies ever produced. It goes to the heart of our fears, prejudices, and apathy. Great performances all around. Definitely one of my favorite films of all time.

Time is but an illusion. Lunch time...doubly so.
Without a doubt, I couldn't agree more. I saw it in 8th grade and is the only thing from High School that has stayed with me my entire life on some emotional level. I own the last version released on DVD, and my girlfriend and I saw the live action performance in Boston last year. It was quite amazing.
The only thing I haven't seen is the 90's remake, which sounds just terrible every time I hear about it. The whole point as BH pointed out is the underlying conflicts of the time and issues such as bigotry associated it. Turning it into a multi cultural affair only dilutes this, imo.
I won't ruin anything, but a film has never moved me in a way this movie does. To this day, I get emotional watching the last 10 minutes.
Sheer brilliance. I wasn't aware of the new edition however. Thanks Brian. This is too cool.

Certainly a virtuoso film, especially the lesser roles which could easily have been assigned to hackwork bit actors. Cobb and Fonda are of course definitive in their roles, and no one could do bigot like Begley. (And he really did pinch his coactor's hand in the gift box while filming that Oscar-winning Southern ole-boy politician performance in Sweet Bird of Youth.)
But don't miss the brilliant job of E. G. Marshall as a seemingly clockwork facts-nothing-but-the-facts stockbroker who's facade is shattered when Fonda observes one telling clue that he too saw -- but didn't know what it meant.
One notes that the script writer (Reginald Rose) is still actively writing for TV, most recently for the brilliant series Boston Legal.

I have seen the update, and I must say it is a brilliant bit of film. while it does not have the same impact as the original, it is very well acted and adapted by the original playwright. Jack Lemmon was so good in that film.Startyde wrote:The only thing I haven't seen is the 90's remake, which sounds just terrible every time I hear about it. As sensei said, the minor roles are just as good. I loved the character of Mr. McCardle, the old man.

Probably one of the most important films I've ever seen in my life.
The 90's remake was pure garbage. Although one of the characters was the same guy playing the same part from the original. Only problem was you could tell he was trying wayyy too hard in the remake and it ended up just making him looking like a ham imo.
