So I saw this:
(it's a 5 part video) Hilarious on some parts...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IUYlqLlb ... annel_page
If you don't want to watch the whole thing, the summary is that fansubbers now are not as good as fansubbers of times past. And that all of their footnotes and so forth ruin anime....
So watch it, it's funny at some points....XD
---------------
I don't think I noticed that before, but after my eyes went bad and I had eye surgery, I notice that it's just too flashy now-a-days....People don't translate the thing correctly...Like the documentary pointed out, translate the thing properly...don't use, what we call it in spanish "POCHO" (aka: Half english and half spanish) It's like saying. Me puedes dar a Taco please? note: Me=Give puedes=Can dar=Give a-A..Hold on..I think I messed up somewhere @_@
------------------
Anywho, the question than becomes...do you agree?
1).Would you rather have them translate the whole Anime properly? Like on DVDs?
2).Half and Half like they like to do, translate some things here and there...
3).Don't give a darn....
---------
I mean Japanese is a very tricky language, and watching a fansub already takes away half of your attention from the anime (To read what is going on) than add the footnotes and the untranslated words.....

Yes. Footnotes annoy me. I'm already reading as fast as I can, picking up some of the language as I go. If I really want to know something more in depth, I'll look it up.
Or ask Klet.
But I like mostly translated with just a good touch here and there left alone, like "shinigami" instead of translating it as "death god" all the time.

I remember last year when a lot of people were commenting on those videos.
Unfortunately some of what he says doesn't make much sense. He's commenting on too many things in a manner that tries to make it look like what he's saying is "objective" when what he's really doing is just giving his opinion on how he would prefer things to be.
So the videos are mainly opinion pieces and not documentaries. I think that's what annoyed people the most out of everyone who disagreed with his videos.
Doesn't anyone remember how horrible some of the old fansub tape translations used to be? Some of them weren't much better than machine translations. Seriously. They were very difficult to understand.

Usually, I prefer the fansubs with little (unobtrusive) pop-down notes. Often there are puns that I am just missing and I appreciate getting them. (I'm thinking of Yakitate Japan). I also like that I can pause and read them ('cuz I can't if I'm reading the subtitles) or ignore them.
Animego did a wonderful job on Urusei Yatsura - their solution was to have printed notes (in the early days), and later, webnotes on each episode so you could find out what the heck some of the references were to. So, even some professionals think notes are a good idea.
I do agree, bad subtitles make watching some shows quite hard. I try to not complain too much as I would be complete lost without subtitles, good or not. I also think that notes should be optional to the viewer - I really hate it when they take up most of the screen while I'm trying to watch what is going on.
