If you like something and have money to burn ...

Post by zerospace »

Money to burn? What's that? Seems like everyone's tight these days. But ...

Perhaps I should have said "if you like jewelry and/or chainmaille and have money to burn" *laughs*. Jewelry is my little-known hobby (when I'm not working on web sites and computers and playing with cels), and has been for years. And, well, after selling a number of these little trinkets to friends of friends, family, etc and being asked by others to sell them, I finally caved and opened a shop up on Etsy. I work with chainmaille, glass, metal clay, and so many other things.

I finally have a bunch of items in my shop after a few weeks of work, but I'll also do custom chainmaille. I'm really not a chainmaille clothing maker, though I certainly can do it. I have plans to design some chainmaille wallet-sized 'purses' along with the random idea of creating a comfortable, wearable chainmaille bra. Yeah. That'll be some time in the making, but I'll probably get there before Christmas... I hope. I'll make just about anything that seems possible, if the idea is cool enough.

Here's my shop link: http://zerospace.etsy.com

I have a ton of other pieces that I still have not yet uploaded to etsy. And if you want anything custom-made, drop me a line. ;) I've already done some custom pieces for shellie (who doesn't post around here much if at all anymore) and bulleta. :)

Anyways, even though I sorta feel a bit strange doing it, I thought I'd post over here in case anyone likes these sorts of things. A few of my other cel friends seem to like the kinds of things I make, so I thought it might be worth mentioning ;).

I'll let you know, then ;). I'm going to be working on those as a collaboration with my very sewing-talented mother to come up with the best method of lining the chainmaille with fabric. Of course, I have to get my butt in gear and make the chainmaille part first! Heh, heh.

Thanks, Shampoo! :D I'll take requests for specific glass colors and shapes to work with ;).

Wow I concur you are very talented Zerospace!

Are the Byzantine pieces actually remenisent of actual Byzantine jewellry or is it just a particular style that's being reffered to?

Thank you!

Byzantine is a well-known and very old chainmaille pattern. Exactly where it originated... I'm not sure. It's generally considered a part of the european family of chainmaille patterns, though. Even though it's very simple to construct, it is still one of the most popular patterns for jewelry (and I suppose you can see why). It's so popular that you'll even see machine-made versions of it in modern jewelry stores.

Byzantine is also known as the birdcage, Fool's Dilemma, or Idiot's Box (the last name is because it is actually box chain units put together in an alternating pattern).

Not at all, seems to be a well cultivated talent you have.

Don't know if your interested, but these are some scans from a book I got from an exhibition I went to on Byzantine (Greek) art a couple of years ago. Not sure if this directly relates to what we were talking about but it's nice anyway.

Thanks, everyone! :) I appreciate all of you taking a few moments to peruse the things I've created.

MyBaby -- the Candy Corn earrings are from a request I got from bulleta last year ;). She wanted glass candy corns, so I made those.

Captain Haddock -- thanks for the images :). Those are very interesting, indeed!

I'm happy to see your creations, as I'm very interested in jewelry making (I'd like to make my job of this later) ^_^ .
You're very talented! My favorite pieces are:

Thank you! :)

I learned different things in different ways, actually. For beading and general jewelry-making techniques, I pretty much learned these by reading, following tutorials, and lots and lots of practice. I started learning those things when I was a little girl, but I walked away from it for years while I went to college and for several years after. Only about 4 years ago did I pick it back up.

For chainmaille, I again learned this by reading and experimenting. I learned how to work with warm glass through a class I took a few years ago, which taught me the basics of fusing. I learned how to do some basic torch work and slumping by reading and understanding how glass behaves as it heats and cools. I also had 4 years of ceramics classes in high school, which is where I learned how to work with clay (hand building, wheel throwing, etc).

So, yeah. What I do now is a long time in the making, but most of the techniques are simple enough to get the idea of pretty fast... the rest is just practice. :)

Best of luck to you if you decide to take up jewelry! It's a lot of fun, and that's pretty much how I view it (even now that I'm selling mine). There's lots of competition in the jewelry-making world, but everyone has a different style. Personally, I think it's important to find your own style and run with it :).

Thank you so much for your advice : ) !
I do know I want to work in jewelry but I'm kinda lost on finding a way to learn, so it really, really helps me!

Excuse me to take your time again, but would you mind giving me the titles of some good books about jewelry? It would be the occasion for me to learn more about it and to practice my English in the same time : ) .
