Domain & Web Hosting...

Post by Golden Boy »

Hi all,
My domain names and web hosting expire next month and I'm considering going with another company. I'm currently with GoDaddy. I'd like to know if anyone has suggestions or recommendations for another host company. I don't use a lot of bandwidth or webspace: just my cel gallery and my portfolio.

Thanks!

I use GoDaddy for my domain name since I bought for several years and waiting to change it over to another place when it runs out in a few years.

My hosting company is 1and1 and I like them. http://1and1.com

Bleh. I hate GoDaddy :x. Perhaps it's just their commercials X|

I wouldn't recommend my former host, Lunarpages, either as their support people are a bunch of inept idiots. Years ago I used www.3shost.com for my hosting, and back then, they were pretty decent. I can't really say these days, though, since I haven't used them since somewhere around 2007. A good friend of mine used www.dot5hosting.com up until last year, when she moved to hosting with me. I don't think she ever had many complaints about them, though it did seem like they outsourced their MySQL databases to an off-site provider, which slowed them down considerably.

I currently use Network Solutions as my domain registrar and to manage my name server(s), and I use a company called Network Redux for my hosting (I have a virtual private server). Redux used to offer shared hosting, but I don't think they do anymore. Their support staff is incredible, though their services are probably way beyond anything you'd need.

I honestly recommand first you to see the list of registrars accredited to operate in your country by ICANN organisation in order to avoid to work with a second rank supplier.

http://www.icann.org/en/registrars/accredited-list.html

Then to visit company websites, compare offers, included services (such as hosting, redirection, Verisign secure enviromnent, GUI, language support, legal advices...).
I'm working for a decade with the same registrar (at this time of internet beginning in old Europe there were only two accredited companies in France) but this is certainly not really helpful for a US citizen with the large amount of existing companies ;)

99.99999% of the registrars people use today are on ICANN's accredited list, especially the ones being mentioned here.

The main exception might be if someone uses a small hosting provider to handle their domain name registration (personally, I recommend using a separate hosting provider and registrar to avoid issues with control over your name), but many of those even appear on ICANN's list these days.

There's no need to be concerned about top-level registrars like GoDaddy or Netsol, and many others (Tucows comes to mind along with register.com and others).
