English song recommendation, whats a popular singer nowadays

Post by theultimatebrucelee »

been listening to J-pop since as along as I can remember and nothing else so now I'm kinda outdated and lost sight of whats popular out there. I'm carious as to what kinda music beta members listen to and, if anyone could recommend me some good songs in English, suggestions most appreciated :D genes don't really matter as long as the songs are good.

thanks in advance!

Muscians/bands I like: Andrew Bird (specific song recs: 'Nervous Tick Motion of the Head to the Left', 'Fake Palindromes',' Eugene') , Scissor Sisters (Song recs: Laura', 'I Can't Decide', 'Music is the Victim'), Miike Snow (Song recs: 'Animal', 'In Search Of'), Mika (rec first album: 'Life in cartoon Motion'), Franz Ferdinand, Leonard Cohen (Fav songs are The Future, Waiting for the Miracle, but he's classic, too much good stuff to list), The Cruxshadows, The Waterboys (fav album ' Rock in a Weary Land'), Razorlight (Song rec ' Girl With the Golden Touch')

Recent Singles I've purchased:' Jimmy' by Of Montreal, 'The Ghost Inside' by the Broken Bells, 'Rolling in the Deep' by Adele

Out of what actually qualifies as 'popular these days' (like Grammy level popularity) I like Mumford and Sons and Arcade Fire.

As for current artists I listen to (and recommend) Arcade Fire, Architecture in Helsinki, Band of Horses, The Decemberists, Missy Higgins. I also listen to older music such as The Beatles, Queen, Pink Floyd, The Cars, The Smiths, Nirvana, Warren Zevon, Alabama and George Harrison.......

Now as for who is popular these days,......seems the kids are listening to Eminem, Adele, Lady Gaga, Lil' Wayne, Katty Perry, Muse, Nicki Manaj, Beyonce, Jay-Z, Lady Antebellum, Miranda Lambert, Jason Mraz, Rhianna, Black Eyed Peas, and for some reason Justin Bieber.....

I would recommend finding the websites for your local "hit" radio stations.

Many stations will do things like list their top most played/requested artists: http://987ampradio.radio.com/artists/

Or have their current playlists up: http://www.channel955.com/iplaylist/playlist.html

Many will also allow you to listen online: http://wdvd.tunegenie.com/listenlive/#/#%2F

(I find this best, because then you know the artist/song title, just in case you like the song)

[all stations linked to are Detroit stations, and I will admit - they have horrific webdesigns]

I'm eclectic myself!
I always mix old w/ new when it comes to music--
just depends on my mood. ^_^

Is there a particular genre your more interested in
than others?

As for top 40 hit stuff, the newest songs I've added
lately to my mp3 player were:
Rihanna- "Only girl in the world"
Nicki Minaj- "Moment 4 life"
Ke$ha- "Blah Blah Blah"

Of course, there are bands I would listen to
whether or not the songs were 2 or 6 yrs old by now!

The Hives (Black/White, Tyrannosaurus Hives, Veni
Vidi Vicious... oh hell, they are all awesome albums! )
The Raconteurs ( and White Stripes when I feel like
a 2-note drum beat LOL!), Serj Tankian (especially
anything off of Elect the Dead album), Franz Ferdinand,
Black Eyed Peas, and Radiohead.

You said you listen to alot of J-Pop?
One of my absolute favorite bands released an album
just last March that had mostly English songs on it.
Though its techno w/ a lil old skool Shibuya-kei
but if your into that, check out Capsule's new album Player.
Theres a DJ that made his own remix to "hello"
thats killer.
Its called "Hello (Hair Kid bootleg remix)"
you might like it, he even makes anime references
in the scat/rap.

Linkin Park
Disturbed
Breaking Benjamin
Hollywood Undead
Pearl Jam
Aerosmith
THE BEATLES
LED ZEPPELIN
and I must comment that BlueHeaven's mention
for Crystal Bowersox was an excellent suggestion

thanks very much for everyone's suggestion!! all are very appreciated :)

so over the past week I've listen to albums from Katie Melua, Andrew bird, Arcade Fire, Beyonce, Rihanna and Nick Minaj. still waiting on ke$ha and Lady Gaga and is planing to look into other suggested artists in the near future. more suggestions than my available time can handle but at some point I should be able to get to most if not all artists mentioned above.

don't want to mention the ones I think are absolutely horrible(cough*beyonce*cough) but out of all I really like Rihanna and Arcade Fire and I now have all the albums of Rihanna on my harddrive :D

thanks again for taking the time to reply guys :)

www.gomusicnow.com

100% legal, .15 per song.

Better quality than iTunes.

Most albums are under $2
