The photos being published are horrific. It's hard to imagine the force needed to destroy structures or produce that kind of destruction. One can only be thankful that the death toll of the 1923 Kantou Earthquake raised consciousness among urban planners, or this quake, which was several orders more intense than that one, would have also led to massive loss of life.

As it is, I'm sure the human tragedy is widespread. I hope that all of us can help in greater and lesser ways to help provide the immediate and long-term aid that catastrophes like these cause, wherever they occur.

This is horrible. I hope that most people had enough warning so they make it to shelter and that everyone is ok.

This is bad, esp since Japanese cities are very dense. I was shocked by the magnitude of the earthquake, close to the 2004 Indonesian earthquake. My thoughts are with the people of Japan.

The videos are dreadful to watch and I just heard a report on the radio that the police have discovered hundreds of bodies in the tsunami aftermath. My heart goes out to the people of Japan.

Our thoughts and prayers go out as well. I know we have quite a few Beta/RS members in Japan.

A really morbid coincidence is that 6 years ago to the day was the funeral of my aunt and uncle who died in the 2004 Asian Tsunami. My cousin just mentioned it on Facebook and it was one of those "woah..." moments.

Wishing the best to everyone affected.

I heard from my friends in Japan earlier this morning. They live in Tokyo and are all fine, but transportation there is still a nightmare. With many of the subway lines still closed, people are being forced into the bus system. Weyrlady said the wait in line for a bus was about 3-5 hours! 8O

Another friend of mine received this e-mail from Amazon Japan this morning:

As far as I have seen, Sendai was the hardest hit. They found 300+ bodies lining the coast last time I checked the news site. It's positively horrific. Just watching people's houses and cars being swept away by tidal waves and mudslides reminds me how fortunate I am. My thoughts and prayers are with everyone as well! And I'm praying for those in Hawaii and California. I hope it dies down a bit before more catasrophe occurs.

:O Just horrible, really nothing you can say for a tragedy like this. :l
