Fave tunes you grew up with
Through my life I've listened to lots of things, mostly metal by default, but I did go through a poppy radio faze when I was a teen in the mid 90's. This is one of the songs I most enjoyed...

Yes! A 90's song! I may have been born in 91, but I still thrive on my love for 90's music. I seriously think something happened to music around 2003 and it's been crashing and burning ever since. I try to give today's music a chance, but anything new played on the radio sounds like dance/club mixes.
Anyways when I was a kid, I lived on Sailor Moon, DBZ, Batman and these songs:

My childhood was epic. xP These songs make me wish I was a teenager in the 90s though, because I never dreamed music of this quality would disappear and get replaced by Lady Gaga and Katy Perry when I grew up...

Re: Fave tunes you grew up with
There does seem to have been a marked change, I think music along with film in many ways has got into the torrid state of making endless remixes and such like as opposed to original content. Money of course has always been a factor in pop music, but now its got to the stage where people seem to think that as long as so and so looks good or puts on a good show it doesn't matter if they have no musical ability. A bit of that's ok, but the fact its becomming the norm now is deppressing.

This song is kind of fun for a new one, but of course they're a 90's band...

Personally i've always been a fan of 80's pop and 70's/80's rock music. While the 90's were my teenage years, there's actually very little music from that decade that i enjoy. I especially dislike the sort of depressing, gloomy pop music and gangster rap that were popular at the time.
Some of my favourites from when i was a kid:
Another Weekend (Five Star): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RfMQJmdw4TI

Re: Fave tunes you grew up with
I think your wrong Macron One, if you were coming from an American perspective I could kind of understandish, but I think the 90's had a real good thing going on with dancy/pop kind of things.
That isn't to say I think the 90's were best. infact I'm going to drive a truck through my previous argument here but hell I'll be contradictory who cares. It's very easy to get stuck in your own thing and believe it's the bomb for whatever reason. I love 90's poppy dance music because I grew up with it and listened to it on the radio when I was an early teen and couldn't afford my own cd's, that was it. It has its meaning for me, but I see it for what it is fun cheese. 80's and 70's were both in very different ways very rich in music in many different genres, the 90's just happened to be the best for electro dance. Most of the best musicians in this genre come from that time, period. That said I do like alot of recent music, I think the likes of Winehouse are great (even though she's rehashing an old genre). But I can see and appreciate modern talent. I guess everyone understands what they listened to was important, which it was and no one should think otherwise, but its harder to see and accept what is new amd worthwile. So I don't know, I think people should just open their minds myself included. Stop being so miserable me!

Re: Fave tunes you grew up with
You're jumping to conclusions a little, methinks. I never said that all 90's music was bad or anything of the sort. All i said is that there was very little music around that i personally liked. I'm not so presumptuous as to think that my own tastes determine what is good and what isn't. The 90's were merely a disappointing decade for myself in terms of popular music because the majority of what was in the charts at the time fell into genres i didn't much care for.Captain Haddock wrote:I think your wrong Macron One, if you were coming from an American perspective I could kind of understandish, but I think the 90's had a real good thing going on with dancy/pop kind of things.
Indeed, dance/trance/techno/house music does not appeal to me at all either, so i didn't really benefit from the abundance of those types of music.
I have no doubt that there's a wealth of fantastic music to suit everyone's tastes being made currently. However, music isn't a hobby of mine and is not important enough to me for me to go out of my way to track down promising, lesser known artists whose stuff i might really enjoy. I expect the same is true for a lot of people who have jobs, family and various time-consuming hobbies, which means most people tend to stick to genres they're familiar with. In an ideal world, everyone would do research and take the time to find new and exciting artists and bands to listen to, but most folks, myself included, will just put on whatever radio station best suits their specific tastes or play CDs/MP3s of their old favourites. Nevertheless, every so often i do come across some new song that i'll happily hum along with...Captain Haddock wrote:That said I do like alot of recent music, I think the likes of Winehouse are great (even though she's rehashing an old genre). He Kathpatty the 60's, 70's were great The Stones, Hendrix and Jefferson Airplane well I could go on for ever. Wish I could have lived through them myself in many ways!
Macron One I wasn't suggesting you were writing off a decade of music or anything I was reacting to the following:
I did listen to Jamoriquai as a teen mostly because my mate listened to it alot so I had to learn to like it by extension. I always had the problem of liking the music but not the man, he was very into Cocain and getting into fights as I recall. I shudder when I hear TLC though, not because its bad or anything though R&B isn't my cup of tea. It's more the fact that at school alot of the girls liked it so then all the guys started pretending to like it to sort of try and look cool I guess. I got sort of put off of it by association really, though perhaps I missed a trick .

Ok I laboured the point a little, but as I said sobriety was not a virtue I was in possesion of at the time. It's a shame that you don't have the time to explore music more though, but if you havne't got the time/inclination it can't be helped I guess.I especially dislike the sort of depressing, gloomy pop music and gangster rap that were popular at the time.

Coming from an “American perspective”, the music of the ‘90s… yeah, that’s what I remember it being.Macron one wrote: … depressing, gloomy pop music and gangster rap…
It’s angry, often whiney, and largely self-absorbed… but isn’t that how people feel sometimes?

Re: Fave tunes you grew up with
Good choices in their Guyver III and I quite agree with what you said about anger and depression in music, aside from a diversion into pop in my early teens it is what I spent most of my youth listening to after all. Man the Korn track took me back, just as I was getting back into metal they were just getting big, I must have listened to that track and that album so many times! And I don't think anyone alive then could have missed Gangsters Paradise, that song was never off the radio! I'm quite suprised you didn't mention Tool, though I do admit they are an aquired taste not shared by all.

When I said 'American Perspective' it wasn't meant in a negative way I was just reffering (obliquiely I concede) to Rap which was predominantly American at the time that was all. And I do like some rap, though it's pretty slender pickings as a genre to me.

Re: Fave tunes you grew up with
I actually only listened to musicals/showtunes in my tween/teen years. Because I'm an oddball like that. Progressed from the oldies like "Seven Brides for Seven Brothers" type shows, to "Pirates of Penzance" to "Les Mis" and "Jekyll and Hyde". The only thing I remember liking on the radio was Bonnie Tyler.

Dude if musicals/showtunes and Bonnie Tyler are what hit the spot for you don't do yourself down for it, love the things you love it's all you can do in life.
