What is the difference between Shitajiki & Clear Files

Post by Gonzai »

Ok, so I am totally clueless here. I have been clearing out the closet of my upstairs to make room
for Rosemary's cels, when I came across a box of what I assume is either Shitajiki and/or pencil
boards. I am not sure where these came from, though, I vaugely remember maybe getting some
or all of them at cons when I first started going. >_<

Anyway, there are quite a few - say somewhere around 50 to 75 of them. I am contemplating
selling them, however, I don't know what they are. At first I thought they were Shitajiki, but
I assumed that Shitajiki was stiff and could not be rolled or something like that. There are a
few things like that in tehe box, but for the most part, they seem flexible - like they could
maybe be rolled and put in a tube, but they are not paper - more like thin plastic..

I don't know - maybe its neither, but some help on this would be most appreciated. ^_^

Shitajiki are usually stiff plastic sheets. They are not normally flexible enough to roll. Clear file are much thinner plastic, but they are actual file folders - two sheets of plastic connected on a side and bottom edge. If it's just a single sheet, it's probably something else, though I don't know what it would be called.

They are all inside plastic sleeves. Guess I will have to see if they are actually folders.

If you can actually put something in it, then it's a clear file. Here's an example:

http://www.animepopshop.com/black-butle ... -folder-a/

And they generally have that little half circle cut out so you can get paper in and out more easily.

A shitajiki is almost always a single hard plastic, and they often come inside a clear plastic sleeve for protection. But I have seen thin plastic shitajiki also. But it's pretty much always just a single sheet. Hope this helps!

Does it open like a book and you can put papers inside? Or is it one single sheet of plastic that is connected at the bottom and one side so you can put papers inside? Both of these types are "clear files" or a type of plastic folders. They're very common in Japan, especially with various anime series. :D Shitajiki are usually--but not always--thicker and smaller than clear files. The whole purpose of a shitajiki is to put it below a piece of paper so you can write on it. The purpose of a clear file is to carry papers like a folder.

Typical sizes of clear files are A4 and B5.
You can find more information on clear files here:
http://www.clearfiles.net/ (Japanese only)

The typical size for shitajiki is B5.
And here's some more information on Shitajiki from Wikipedia:
http://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/%E4%B8%8B% ... 7%E3%81%8D (Japanese)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shitajiki (English)

Hope this helps! :D

Thanks to everyone for the information and the links. I believe that I have somewhere
around 60 clear files, and 120 pencil boards. Now, here is the kicker - I can't imagine,
for one moment, that there are mine. I don't have a clue where they came from. @_@

At first I thought they may have been from early on when I went to conventions, however,
for the most part, I have not seen the series, nor have I ever even heard of some of the
series on many of them. There are actually some really pretty ones. I am sure the Card
Captor Sakura fans would love some of them, however, I have never even see that anime. >_<

So now that I know what they are, I have to figure out whose they are, and/or where did
they come from - but most importantly, what the hell are they doing in my closet of my
anime room. O_o

It sounds like things may actually be reproducing in your closet. This is quite exciting. Check in a few days to see what arrives next :D

I wish my artwork would multiply like that. @_@

Mystery solved. It belongs to Kaila's mom Katie. WHen she and Jsh used to
be together, she was big into collecting. Apparently, when Josh moved home,
he accidently brought the box with him and when he realized it, he put it up
in the closet instead of giving it back to her. >_<

Anyway, I called her and she said she had forgot about it and really doesn't
want it anyway, so...... not sure what I will do with it now. I have zero idea
of what these things are worth. -_-

Shitajiki collecting has really declined in recent years. If you want to get some idea of value for specific boards, you can look at
http://www.shitajiki.biz/.
New boards have been sold new in the US for $4 or $5. However, their availability in the US has declined significantly. Clear files have never been very popular as far as collecting in the US.

I'm having a similar problem, I have a box full of clear folders about 200-250 of them and I don't know what to do with them! I had a friend ask me before she moved if I wanted "a couple" of file folders I said sure, before she left she set a box down on the floor and said it was for me..O.O omg I don't have this many reports!

Do you think my boss would enjoy a ah my goddess file folder for a case file? :D

Well - I listed about 50 of the shitajiki on eBay.

http://www.ebay.com/sch/m.html?_odkw=&i ... &_from=R40

It was a stretch on some of these to figure out where they were even from. @_@

And I still have 70+ to go. That doesn't even include the clear files. >_<

That Persona shitajiki is pretty rare. I don't remember seeing much from the original PS game release. It's the first in the Persona series of games by Megami Tensei. The "Be Your True Mind" is a sort of subtitle for the first game, since the full title is "Megami Ibunroku Persona". The later games were simply called Persona. Great series, although I've only completed one of them. ;p
