While we're at it, some of the paper anime art is going for good prices, too. Here's a Yoshinori Kanada rough from Space Battleship Yamato, unfortunately with a nasty celotape burn across the middle. Opening bid, 15,000 yen.

Closing bid...

704,000 JPY = $8375.47 + 10% = $9213.02 One wonders how much it would have been worth if whoever first owned it had taken time to get that strip of celotape off before it permanently damaged the sketch.

This is my first BWA and some of this is ridiculous.

Now, I was wondering about this piece. I have seen sistermates sell for maybe $2,500 - 3,000 in previous auctions without the background. But, this is so far going for $13,000-ish. However, there is no mention of there being an actual background in the description, and yet one is being shown.

So, does anyone know if this is an actual key master background, a copy background, a reproduction background? Or? I would ASSUME if it was indeed an original master background, they would actually say it in their description. So, why is this not being mentioned?

There are also 50 Limited edition re-prints of this image and background that Gainax produced & released back in 2000/2001 for comiket (I think it was). Each 'cel' (complete with sequence number) was a reproduction & came within a specially designed frame with numbered plaque, copy of the genga & authenticity certificate. These of course sold-out within the first 10minutes. On the few instances one has made it to the Open Market, the last price attained was in the 1,000,000yen mark.
I would be asking the question, is this the original 'master' or one of those limited re-productions?

Ask them and answer would be the front page one:
"There is no item presented by a third person without permission of Mandarake. So there is no risk of fake items. You can participate in the auctions without worrying about it."

Mandarake company is driven by humans, generally basing controls on Youtube screenies and reputation of seller, not on true computer analysis of arts, so my sincere apologies but risk is still existing of seing potential mislabelled items.

I would be very concerned about that as well. I will be honest, I have been sold a fake reproduction before by Mandarake when they told me by e-mail it was original production and not a repro. This happened about 8 or 9 years ago. When I found out about it 2 months later, they accepted a return on it. But, it was only thanks to the help of a Beta member that helped me with it. One of the other big reasons why I value the community on this board.

And based on my bad experience, I always tell people to never assume anything if it is not in writing!
