Lessee ... that's about $48,000. Still about half the current average price for contemporary abstract and impressionist art at Sotheby's and Christie's. Overall, Japanese animation art is still a comparative bargain.

But it is still more than double the median income for Japan.

Am I the only thinking that this is kinda strange, even seeing the Evangelion standards X| ?

i understand buying something you love.

still that's a lot to pay for something that has a lot of wear and tear to it.

That is a gorgeous cel. Honestly, I would have been surprised if it would go for even 1/2 that ending price as even Key Master set ups from classic Disney fetch less than that (even a few from Snow White). Makes me wonder if anything fishy is going on over there.
Mecha cels from Evangelion generally go for much less than the characters (especially the women).

As for the other one on YJ, any possibilities it could be a fake? The image is too small for me to get an accurate read on it. It is just kind of weird the humungous price difference.

As my translation engine reads it, it has a reserve price on it, which the current high bid (20,000 yen) doesn't meet. So the price difference may not be as humongous as it presently seems. Maybe tomorrow we'll find out; or maybe the owner is just advertising that he/she has it and is using the auction (with a reserve price so high that it's unlikely to be met), hoping to attract a private offer after it closes with no sale.

So, the Unit 00 sold for 800,000 yen (~$10,000). That is a huge difference between $10,000 and $48,000 on the Eva 01 Mandarake auction. Did the Reserve meet on YJ?

Hmm... Isn't 800000 yens the reserve price ? For what I've seen in the bids record, the previous bid was of 38000 yens. It's a huge difference.

As I said, I cannot understand why the EVA 01 cel has reached a so ridiculous amount, but I'm pretty sure it was very much more than the market value. So, I don't expect other cels to reach the same amount.
