Sensei and Men's Health

Post by sensei »

When I was in the checkout line at Wal-Mart, with a couple unloading the contents of two shopping carts ahead of me, I picked up Men's Health as I often do, drawn by the "Dress for More Sex" feature article. This time I was a little surprised to find that I was actually in the issue, fully credited as a Men's Health advisor, complete with a little thumbnail photo. (I immediately stashed one of the bags of kettle-cooked potato chips that I was about to buy over by the eyeglass repair kits.)

If Men's Health sits on your coffee table next to Shonen Jump and Penthouse, have a look-through. If you turn to p. 24, you'll see the magazine's Expert Advisors: I'm in the "On Call This Week" section. Look for the man who resembles the hottest guy in this week's Anime Beta "Best Hunk" contest. I'm the other one, and the blurb will take you to the story (about the role of sick humor in coping with disasters).

Cool stuff!! Glad to see there's some guys who try and look after themselves! I sometimes get it, if I have money...but I'm pretty sure you guys over there get a different mag to us in the UK, but congrats, that's pretty neat!

I didn't want to scan the whole thing, since I'm only in part of it (and it's copyright material anyhow). But this will give you the idea.

The "Expert Advisors Page":

The "Screamer" for the story (reduced for convenience):

The first page, so you can get the idea of what the whole article is about:

And the ending, which is where I come in:

It's not the first time I've been in the media. Every year I get a few people say that they saw me on A&E's "Haunted Houses" documentary. And I'm amused to see that "W.S.H.," a docudrama I was in for the BBC, has become a sort of cult classic for Ron Rifkin fans (he played the fictional folklorist who's trying to debunk all the urban legends and eventually explodes from squid who have hatched out in his abdomen), who are campaigning to have it out on DVD, or at least rerun once in a while.

I didn't get paid for this job (even had to buy my own copy of MH), but they did take care to get me quoted accurately, which is more than many magazines do when I interview for them.
