New Quirky Gallery Tour: The People's Choices!

Post by sensei »

I've made over my interactive Quirky Gallery Tour again, this time using an idea that's been active on Beta: the items that, for some odd reason, get more hits than any others in the gallery. As my Top 50 have been made up of 96% CCS cels, I took some time to look at the hit counts of each of the 23 series that I collect and identify the most visited item for each of them.

The results were often interesting. Some are what I'd expect: a really special item in a relatively small gallery. Others are very counterintuitive -- perhaps the result of hotlinking? or maybe someone who just happens to love a minor character for which I happen to have a good cel or sketch.

In the usual way, I've made the tour tricky, arranging it not by series title (you have to click on the thumb to find out) and using a 150x125 pixel selection from the large image of the lucky item. And I've arranged them from fewest hits (just 82 for the most popular image from a relatively new CGI series) to most (Sensei's most visited animation art item: 3925 hits!). See how many you can guess before clicking!

And, if you're interested, follow the links to the full description and then explore around and give some of the other items a few hits as well.

BTW: I've also redone the gallery design (in honor of my Ireland trip) and have a small but nice update in the works as well.

dang youre so mean, Sensei. :P
whoever that collector of CCS was it was probably him/her alone that gave you over three thousand hits for it!
omgosh, poor person mustve like visited her twenty times a day just to be near her! :drool LOL

but once again youve come up with an ingenious way of getting more people to visit your site!
you have a fun site there i must say! ;)

To be honest, though, I did trade him two other cels of mine, one nicer than this one that went with a series I knew he was trying to reconstruct and reanimate. And for a time I alerted him to other cels/sketches from the episode that were FA and which I wasn't interested in.

Actually, it doesn't. All those quartz cobbles (they're about softball sized) had to be gathered from somewhere on the seashore by hand and then toted on somebody's back (the wheel not having been invented yet) overland to the Newgrange site. There they were cemented one by one, in a geometrical pattern, onto the side of the hill that faced southeast.

The thinking is that they would have glowed golden-yellow on the days when the winter solstice sun would rise, giving the populace outside something to oooh and aaaah about while a small group of astronomer-priests would have waited inside to observe the first beam of sunlight as it penetrated some 80 feet through a narrow, carefully engineered tunnel and illuminated the inner chamber.

Amazing. Cavemen weren't any dumber than NASA rocket engineers and computer programmers are today. They just had simpler toys and more patience.

but this will just give those cels with lots of hits more hits.. thus never giving your cels a chance to be numbah one.. or two. :(

That's what God intends: To all who have, more will be given, and they will have more than enough. But everything will be taken away from those who don't have much. (Matthew 25:19)

In fact I don't think surveys like this will have much on an impact. In most cases, the winning item already has several hundred hits more than #2. It does publicize the fallacy of equating visits with quality. In a about a third of cases you could reasonably say the top item is a better-than-average cel/sketch. But in the rest the choice seems to be based on factors that I'd say are essentially random. And quirky tourists won't add more than, I'd guess, a couple dozen hits -- if that. (Most will stop at the tour image rather than following the link to the main page.)

Maybe later I'll go through and do a tour of the least popular item in each series.
