Sensei's May Flakery Deux (TnN, CCS, IY, NieA_7)

Post by sensei »

After some disruption due to my moving to a new computer (Usagi Toshiba) and scanner (CanoScan LiDE 90) and in general recuperating from an exhausting final pull-out from campus and helping my wife come back from knee surgery, I've finally managed the second half of my traditional May update. (Someone warned me that tomorrow would be too late for some reason.)

The update isn't quite as elaborate as previous May buying frenzies, but there's still nice items to enjoy. Cel-watchers will especially like a matched set of Tennimon OP cels that I was lucky enough to nab recently, One of Noelle looking longingly at Yuusuke, and the other, from the next cut, showing Yuusuke reacting in something approaching panic.

It's been a while since I added cels to my CCS gallery devoted to the first episode, and so it's pleasant to be able to upload two new items:

a new cel from the cut where Sakura finally captures The Fly, and
a fascinating set-up showing the scene through the eyes of the soaring Card Spirit

This latter piece, a kind gift from reithejelly in honor of my hard-won retirement (I went out with the email equivalent of semi-automatic weapons fire) has a fascinating history. What happens when the bg, already canvas-sized, turns out to be ... well ... just a skosh too small? And filming for this cut is already overdue! Uh ... how about we . . .

If paper is your thing, you'll like the two new sets of gengas from a late episode of Inuyasha, executed by the talented team of artists who worked under Tatsuya Ishihara. (Notably the animation director for this episode, ShÅ

Thanks for coming, funshine and Bd16! (Where is everyone, btw? This would be a good time to declare a war, because no one would come.)

funshine, can you pass on what you think you know about this set, in a PM if you feel more comfortable? I only know that they came up last month on Yahoo Japan, sold by geogiecandy, a dealer from whom I've previously gotten some very nice cels. I was ready to bid the family jewels but happily won the set for under my initial reserve. It is a beautiful set, perfectly matched (mid-cut key to mid-cut key) and in fine condition. They must have been much cherished items in a previous collection, and they'll have a star place in mine.

Uh ... someone go look at the NieA stuff! It's not as spectacular as the Tennimon, but it's not often that you manage to snag the episode-end image of a (actually very pretty) protagonist in a well-respected series. I'm really happy with these, and now I'm not trammeled by using my institution's laptop, I'd love to learn how to reanimate sketches myself. (See what you did, vampyreshoujo?)

OK, everyone pick up a weapon of mass destruction. We're going over the top and show those Canadian bastards who's boss. Uh ... how many people do we have behind me?

Thanks, Gonzai. I should have typed "series-end" rather than just "episode-end," as the only thing that follows this cut is a long shot of the crash, and then the usual "thank you for watching this series" card and the credits. It's an enjoyable series, slow-paced like all of yoshitoshi ABe's stories, but with tons of zen and a charm of its own.

The CCS set-up is really very well done, even if the studio had to stick on an inch-wide strip at the top when it turned out to be too small for the camera work. Poor Sakura and Kero ran out of paint when they tried to escape down the road!

Just heard this morning that my Emeritus status will become effective at the end of the month. It's semi-automatic (a campus can request that it not be given, but it usually is), and, more importantly, comes with continued computer and library account access. (I can also buy a parking permit for the main campus "at the prevailing rate.")

Nobody came to the war on the Canadian side either, so my insanely loyal minions and I captured the nearest Tim Horton's and settled in to doughnuts and coffee. The trans-fats, I'm sure, will do us in as effectively as Canadian WMDs. (But the doughnuts are darned good -- we need a Tim Horton's in Cephiro!)
