Small but nice CCS Update

funshine: Thank you also. I used to get lots of cels/sketches just because of the character or because they are attractive. There's so much CCS inventory around that even after 9 years it's still easy to start a nice collection of this series. But as I go on, more and more I'm focusing on getting art from those handful of really important moments. There are a few more of these to go . . .

Hi ^_^ I always enjoy looking at your new updates. I especially like to see your CCS ones, but it is always a challenge to not look at the descriptions on some. I have not made it that far into CCS you see.

I hear you: but I don't know exactly how to handle the spoilers issue. The series is going on ten years old, after all, so it's kinda like telling people that

Moby Dick sinks Cap'n Ahab's ship, killing everyone but Ishmael

(Actually, I don't know how the anime version turns out because I got so sick to my stomach watching the first 2 episodes at Katsucon that I never investigated further.)

CCS aficionados seem to like the long discussions of the scenes, so I'm hesitant to trim them back. Maybe I could put the spoiler notice up above the screen cap and the context description below? (But a lot of times the cel itself is a spoiler...)

I dunno: anyhow, I envy you in having the rest of CCS to watch for the first time. I still remember that first watch-through as one of the most enjoyable things I've ever done in my life -- expecting it to fall off in quality or get hokey, and being surprised at every step of the way when it didn't.

Oh no, its not like that. I just go and look at the pretty artwork. ^_^ For the small handful of episodes I have seen, I read your descriptions. I like long scene descriptions myself. I feel its pretty helpful in establishing the mood and context for the scene itself. Its like, slowly building up on a crescendo, and when you finally reach that high point, BAM! There is that cel -at least, for some of the more poignant scenes In other cases, its just nice to see where a cel fits into the grand scheme of things.
(In other words, please keep your descriptions the same )


I wish I had watched it when I first heard about it almost 10 years or so ago now... Other Sailor Moon fans told me I'd absolutely love it. I finally caved in and purchased the whole series in one fell swoop. Rightstuf made the price pretty attractive at $70 +shipping for 18dvds That same year, My eldest daughter also coincidently managed to receive a set of 9 or so english language dvds... the man in red gifted them to her. She's 9 now and watches subtitled shows frequently with us, but at the same time she sometimes just want to watch her shows in English if the subs go by too fast.

Your daughter will have some surprises in store if she moves from the English dub Cardcaptors to the Japanese sub Cardcaptor Sakura. The Canadian studio Nelvana (Care Bears, Magic Schoolbus) decided that the original plot line would not succeed with the target audience (8-10 year-old boys) so they essentially tossed out the original script and wrote new dialog.

Original (from Ep. 17: Sakura and the Scary Courage Test aka "The Cave")

Li Syaoran: It's better to get close as quietly as we can. So that the card doesn't notice us.

Kinomoto Sakura: Let me try. [She does her card-activating bank] Envelop me and take me to that land. FLOAT! [They fly over the lake toward where the Card is hiding.]

Li: Because we don't know our opponent's identity, we must find its true form. (Sakura nods) I can't find its exact location with my compass. (Sakura nods again)

Dubbed version:

Lee Showron: You’re still worried about ghosts aren’t you? Boy! Have you got a card for this or not?!

SaKOOra Avalon: Yeah, I do! [She does her card-activating bank] Float Card! Transport us to the other side! Release the spell! [They fly over the lake toward where the Card is hiding.]

Lee Showron: I admit that maybe you do have some special powers, but there’s a lot more to being a Cardcaptor. (SaKOOra nods) And it doesn’t mean that your powers are stronger than mine, OK? (SaKOOra nods again)

See how much better a role model Lee Showron is for North American kids than the magical nerd Li Syaoran? I understand that watching the first movie (which was also dubbed by Nelvana along the same principles) in English with the subtitles (which accurately translate the original dialog) turned on is a seriously surreal experience.

There used to be a whole series of fanfics featuring Madison Taylor (the dubbie version of Tomoyo Daidouji) who had an unusual number of howlingly absurd lines. (If the truth be known, I actually tried my hand at writing some, one of which, "The Night of the Living Dubbies," gained some degree of notoriety.)
