Sensei's Death Scan Finally Concludes with More PPGZ
UPDATE PART ONE: While dipping in and out of semester-end classes and grading stacks of final work, I’ve managed to get up my latest set of pretties, courtesy of the Anime Museum sale. Highlights:
Saiyuki pan gengas are already legendary for their hanken-like excellence, but my new Son Gokus (from an important series of scenes near the end of the Gunlock season) are especially tasty. One is the episode-ending image from Ep. 22, showing a mostly unclothed brawler in a foul mood. The other one, where he adds but a single bandaid to his upper torso, shows him delivering one of his most memorable lines.
On a slightly more playful front, I’ve added two Tonde Buurin cels, of which the most intense is poor Buurin being gripped by a humongous demon with garish red painted fingernails. This is evidently from the start of the big series-concluding battle, in which the forces of CLAMP threaten to take over Buurin-land and make it a suburb of Tsubasa World. (Be sure to read the carefully researched context; don't worry about spoilers, as the series isn't readily available to watch in this country anyhow.)
Also, I’ve nearly doubled my teeny Vampire Princess Miyu gallery with two pretty portraits. I like trying out interesting mats behind new cels, and occasionally one fits so well that it actually makes the cel change expression. This one actually smiled at me a little, which would be eerie if it hadn’t happened a couple times before.
Also (though I didn’t have time to make a separate post), I put up nine new Tennimon cels about a week ago and reorganized this part of my gallery to make it easier to browse. The highlight was this intense image from one of the Natsumi/Fuyuki dream sequences but I also have a peculiar fondness for this image of Miruru relaxing blissfully into her Gabriel’s manly arms.
UPDATE PART TWO Thanks to my SMJ Swag, which arrived this week:
One of the finest Tonde Buurin henshin cels I've seen, with Karin midway between human and porcine form, eyes wide open, and really inspiring in its own sexy way.
Plus three nice Tennimons, including a great sweaty pan cel of Mikael as he holds the tatters of the Book of Chaos heavenward in a last effort to achieve angelic status.
Also, a lovely Raphael from the last episode. Caution: spoilers in the description!
And a dramatic cel of Angel Noelle running through Yuusuke, as if he (or she) no longer existed.
UPDATE PART THREE: More goodies from my SMJ Swag:
A whole series of dramatic rough gengas from The Powerpuff Girls Z, Toei Studio's radical rethinking of the American fixture. This is the normally mild-mannered Miyako using her magical weapon, a bubble wand, to rather amazingly intense effect. Visit the whole gallery to learn more about Japanese children's attachment to kabutomushi, or "helmet beetles."
A delightful oversized genga of Momoko, the heartful leader of the Powerpuff Girls. More to come!
This nice CCS background + book layer with an usually good view of "The Nude Angel," an iconic work of inspirational art at Sakura's school. (Yes, the same statue Li Syaoran is seen sketching in so much detail soon afterwards...)
A dramatic CCS Episode One cel of Windy entrapping The Fly. (And it's nice to be able to bid on these Ep. 1 cels again without people playing weird bidding games all around me!)
UPDATE PART FOUR:
1. Four more Tonde Buurin cels, three with backgrounds. All are nice, but this one, showing Karin indulging a tiny passion of hers, "takes the cake."
2. A set of two MKR dougas and a CCS cel, all sent to me as an unexpected Christmas present by reithejelly (of Stem Cels). The prize among these is this exquisite image of Mira, the little girl with the big role in saving Cephiro from annihilation.
UPDATE PART FIVE:
1. The final miscellanous batches of PPGZ sketches, some quite funny, others rather interesting in showing how animation art seems to have evolved past the now obsolete genga/douga routine. Start here if you dare!
UPDATE PART SIX AND LAST:
A final clutch of PPGZ gengas, arriving from Mandarake on the day after Christmas, brings my great December update to a close. Featured in this part:
1. this really dashing henshin bank image of Powered Buttercup
2. a great concluding pose of all three heroes in balletic poses,
3. a very fine combat image of Buttercup and Bubbles (like Sakura, she’s not nearly as ditzy as she seems when she goes mahou shoujo), and
4. a deliciously evil Mojo Jojo.
[More at the end of the thread.]

Thanks, aernath (for enthusiastic RS feedback too!), kira, and redwolf. It's always nice to get another look at updates, since what I really liked (in this case the Miyu portraits) just might not be everyone's favorite. But I'm glad the Son Gokus got fully appreciated. You don't have to be a sweaty nekkid guy fancier to see that these are really excellent art in a Greek Revival artistic mode. And to find that they are (as I'd suspected) crucial moments makes them all the more special. My apologies to Vapalla and to Tex-chan (as I seem to have slipped in ahead of both and nipped items on their watchlists this time) and my assurances that these guys are being given the best of archival care.
kira and redwolf (and otakusin via RS feedback), I appreciate the comments on the TnN additions. I'm always thinking I've got enough (or too many) cels from this series, but then I'm always being surprised.
And Tonde Buurin is a marvelously designed series, even if it's nearly impossible to get to watch (unless you're fluent in Chinese -- evidently there are quite a number of sub/dub issues of it available there).
And thanks, as always, to all who came to visit.

I managed to catch your additions on RS, but, somehow, missed this thread. *fwaps self*
You already know I really enjoyed your Saiyuki Reload additions. Episodes 22, 23, and 24 of Reload are among the best Saiyuki has to offer, I think. Lots of soul-searching and deep decisions that the heroes have to make in there, and, still, they come out on top in the end -- as if there was ever any doubt. *laughs*
I failed to mention it in my email to you, but I also really enjoyed the new Vampire Princess Miyu additions. The darker portrait, which you put against the multi-colored background, is very pretty. I love the shading and coloring, and her eyes are spectacular.
I haven't yet explored your Tonde Burrin additions. I'm hoping to do that later this afternoon, if time permits.
Congrats on your new pretties!!

Sorry to be so late! I already told you that I love your Saiyuki sketches. The Kamisama arc of Reload has some of the best art. Your dark and mysterious Miyu is very lovely and captures her otherworldlyness. The Buurin is appropriatly silly. What that poor girl goes through in that series!:P
I have to say though, that your new avatar is probably the strangest yet. I'm afraid of what you might do for Christmas!

In the midst of final grading ... yet just in time to lift my spirits ... here comes my SMJ swag with lots of pre-Christmas goodies.
Because of my commitment to grading, this update will take a while to complete. But I got up the real prizes tonight:
One of the finest Tonde Buurin henshin cels I've seen, with Karin midway between human and porcine form, eyes wide open, and really inspiring in its own sexy way.
Plus three nice Tennimons, including a great sweaty pan cel of Mikael as he holds the tatters of the Book of Chaos heavenward in a last effort to achieve angelic status.
Also, a lovely Raphael from the last episode, giving Natsumi a wonderfully tender smile from the afterlife.
And a dramatic cel of Angel Noelle running through Yuusuke, as if he (or she) no longer existed.
More to come (as grades get turned in): Tonde Buurin (backgrounds!), CCS (ditto!) and a whole drift of infectiously lively rough gengas from Toei Studios' remake of The Powerpuff Girls in classic mahou shoujo terms.

Ah ... I had to weigh in here again to say how much I love your second and third round of additions. I'm sorry I'm so late in doing so. I looked at everything as you put it up on RS, but the holiday craziness has me being rather a hermit when it comes to sitting down and doing emails and update thread replies. I'm trying to catch up, though.
Anyhoo -- I love the newest things you've added! The "sweaty Mikael" has to be my favorite of the lot. What a wonderful, intense image! That Raphael is also mighty special, though. I love that gentle smile, and that was such a wonderful scene in the show.
I'm a huge fan of the Powerpuff Girls -- the American version. So, I'm not sure how I would feel about the "Japan-ified" (<-- oooh! a new word!
) version. But, those sketches are just darn cute.
I still feel sorry for Karin in Tonde Burrin, because she turns into a pig. (Yeah, it's pretty obvious I've not seen any of the show -- LOL!) But, I do love your new henshin of her. That is one adorable cel. The expression on her face and the pose -- priceless.
Congrats on even more wonderful new additions!
