Sensei's Moved (and updated)

Post by sensei »

Sensei's moved! Those of and gotten all of his cels and sketches back into the same room for the first time in 2 months!

Those of you who followed my RS blog know that it was an event-filled experience, including a funeral, a trip to the ER with my wife (who had a nasty fall), a direct hit on the old house by a bolt of lightning, and no end of complications dealing with the move itself. And this doesn’t include the twister that went through the old neighborhood the weekend after we finally emptied the house.

But all ended well, kinda, though we had to box up everything we owned and then think about unboxing the stuff. Fortunately, we have a lifetime to do this. Here’s a shot of the new house in Maryland:

Although the lot is smaller and closer to our neighbors, we like the way that the development kept as much of the trees and shrubbery as possible. Our cat Oliver likes this too!

When the movers departed, here’s what the kitchen looked like.

And if that wasn’t scary enough, here’s the living room. (Another view from the other side.)

It took several days just to carve out some living/working space, but gradually, we started to settle in, and now, three weeks after the move, the living room now looks like this.

Oh, and the anime collection has finally gotten a decent home, out of the unstable shelves of the old closet and into sturdy wooden shelves where they can be kept in shape and organized.

Time for an update:

:jump :yay :yay :yay :yay :yay :jump

Check out two new sketch sets from the pretty but still unheralded Tenchi Muyo! spinoff, Sasami: Mahou Shoujo Club, including a tearful Sasami and an impressive portrait of Washu and the magic teachers.

Not much is known over here about this series: so far as I know only the first episode was fansubbed. But advance word (supported by the amount of paraphernalia on sale at YJ) is that it’s actually pretty good, and as it’s been licenced recently, perhaps soon we’ll get a better sense of what it’s like. The art and summaries I’ve read suggest it’s strongly influenced by Magic Knight Rayearth and other CLAMP series, but with its own Tenchi-universe flavor.

Also up, two beautiful cels from the Tonde Buurin OP sequence, one of the whole cast in Biblical garb, the other of an exuberant flying Karin,

Finally, some interesting sketches and backgrounds from CCS, including Yue being zapped by The Void and another immediately recognizable background from Episode 40 (the “Dream” episode).

More to come including CCS cels, Saiyuki gengas, and, of course, another batch of PPGZ (we get to meet Buttercup’s totally insane parents, one of whom lives in his professional wrestling mask). But scanning, while now possible, is taking a back track to getting back a lifestyle routine.

Off to demolish a few more boxes!

Thank you, all, for your encouragement over the move (and also to those who cheered us on through the RS blog). It really was, physically, the most painful thing I've ever done -- day after day of sorting, stuffing, wrapping, and toting seemingly endless batches of stuff, either to the garage to move or to the curbside to trash. And it's taken several weeks to get some degree of focus back after the move, to the point that I can concentrate enough to upload stuff to RS.

But I honestly feel that the move is a beneficial one. My wife is much happier with the social environment (she's already volunteered for a dramatic group) and I'm growing comfortable with the work split between the weekdays at school and the weekends at home (I've gotten used to calling it "Cephiro" because it really feels like a different universe from my work world).

Cordelia, the purple flowers are from two big potted plants that I inherited from the previous owner. I thought they were Bougainvilleas but they're not, I find. I hope they are hardy, or at least can be wintered over in the greenhouse that came in the back yard. The previous owner, like, me, is an avid gardener -- I even moved my 3-foot saguaro that I grew from a seed.

Kittens, the lightning was scary, but not so rare in my neighborhood, which sits on a little hill in the middle of a big valley. Both of our neighbors were hit by lightning during the previous years when we lived there: one had bad fire damage as a result. During one of the hits, a neighbor said "it was just as if the whole world had turned bright blue for a second." That's exactly what I experienced, even though I was asleep at the time (with my apnea mask on). Fortunately, by that time most of my cel collection was in storage at school, but I still thought about taking the 4 books that remained downstairs with me. Happily, the house was well grounded, so the force of the bolt went into the ground (and fritzed our water system instead).

Thanks everyone for the comments on the house. We love it: it's all on one floor, well designed so nothing is a long walk from anything else, and our Oliver has gotten used to the woodsy back yard (and the yappy dogs that live everywhere).

And watch for more Buurin in the future! Thanks to YouTube, we can begin getting a sense of what it's like visually, though most of what's put up is the Mandarin Chinese dub. But if you go there, you can now actually find a fansubbed version of the opening episode. It's certainly well worth learning about, as (apparently) is Sasami, the new CGI addition to the Tenchi world.

More to come ... but next week, alas. And I forgot about the xxxHolic sketches (thanks, Rei!). I'll get those up as well.

Back to box-ripping...

Sensei,

Congratulations on the new house. It looks very nice and your collection looks right at home on the new shelves. Now you need an artists wing to rotate, display, curate, and of course, give guided tours through the CLAMP universe :)

It also sounds like you chose a good time to be leaving the old neighborhood. Hmmm, a lightning strike and tornados at your old house. I wonder what portents that would convey? Glad to hear you weren't in the house at the time.
