Weird but Beautiful Update

Post by sensei »

In between my commutes between Cephiro, Arl, and (last week) Newfoundland, I've found moments to scan and upload some of my new stuff. The good news is that it's beautiful art. The bad news is that it's all from series practically unobtainable here and so nearly unknown to otaku or collectors. (The good news about that last bit is that it's extremely cheap, a lot of artistic quality for a mere handful of yen.) So if you want a break from the same-old, stop by and see the new exhibits, which include some especially nice cels with original backgrounds from the cult classic Tonde Buurin (Super Pig!):
Also some very pretty sketches from the nearly unknown AIC Tenchi Muyo! spin-off series Sasami: Mahou Shoujo Club, which as several blogs note, is surprisingly good (Le style graphique reste simple mais assez beau. Certains passages sont même superbes) but extremely difficult to locate, even in raw Japanese downloads (...dommage que ce soit assez rare.) Added this week: No, neither show is FMA, Bleach, IY, or Kenshin. But have a look: I think you'll like what you see.

Nice update.

I realy love the detail on Sasami's eyes in this one.

Fantastic update, as always!! I always get a huge amount of enjoyment out of browsing your Tonde Buurin section. (Vapalla's too!!) I love seeing the cels with their original backgrounds, and you have some of the nicest pieces around from that show ... well, at least from what I've seen, art-wise. I'll be the first to admit my knowledge is limited.

My favorite is the first cel of Karin about to transform behind the bushes. What a lovely set-up!! I really like the entire look of that cel, and, as always, Karin's face is very expressive.

The Sasami: Mahou Shoujo Club sketches are also very nice. I particularly like the last one, of Amitabu flying away. Very pretty and lively sketch, with a lot of nice creative detail to it.

Congrats on your new additions.

Nice to see your "Sasami ~ Mahou Shoujo Club" sketches Sensei. I liked the themes of the first season.

The second season only had about five raw episodes released through the usual channels so I never got to see the conclusion of the series. But the second season didn't seem that enjoyable to me compared to the first so I'm not much concerned about it.

Thanks everyone for comments (and especially thanks to Kittens for clearing up what was written on the strip of paper around Karin's head while she was studying).

Cordelia and Roboflonne: I have no idea what those darn things are. At first, I suspected they were durians (a smelly, spiky fruit popular in Asia). But durians don't come with metal handles. TB is one of those shows that really seems to have stretched animators' sense of what can be done with animation. Yet it's not all India rubber fun and games, at TC points out: at times it can be remarkably beautiful. (I personally like "Sheik" Takuma with the dramatic not-quite-black background.) Thank heavens, fansubs are starting to pop up on YouTube!

Thanks, too, to Keropi, JWR, and TC for your comments on Sasami. All I've seen was the opening episode, which was ... nice ... but not as engaging as the opening episodes of series that I really like. I gather that once the characters are introduced, the plot picks up steam and can go rather dark at times (like CCS and TnN). All I really know is what the blogs say, which is mostly in like with Keropi's comment, except that I hear that there's an emotional crisis dealing with Misao late in the 2nd season that hits pretty hard. Anyhow, the art is more-than-nice and will keep me going until Funimation lets us all see what it's like.

In a follow-up that's just a twitch more mainstream, I've just added:
  • From TnN, two dramatic oversized cels of poor Mikael Screaming at the climax of Step 25 (link is to the B7, but don't miss the even nicer B10 next door).

From Tonde Buurin, yet another amazing WTF cel of Buurin Stuffed in a Bag wearing Shades

And my one nod to cel-collecting orthodoxy, a beautiful Vampire Princess Miyu OVA cel (my first from this version of the series), showing Miyu’s Eyes Close Up
This may be my last update for awhile (an academic conference starts to loom), but I'm working on a 40K hits celebration with a new Buurin henshin cel, some pretty Hyper Police sketches (some ecchi) and, as always, lots more PPGZ.

Enjoy!

I admit that it took me awhile to get into "Sasami ~ Mahou Shoujo Club". It probably took me about six or seven episodes before I truly got into the flow of the series. The hook for me early on was that they used young seiyuu for the roles.

Animation has a different feel when actual child actors are employed. I decided to keep watching the series because I've been burned too many times after dropping a series too early. After I finished the first season, I estimated that Sasami was probably my second favorite anime series that had had only one episode English fansubbed.

Usually I'm not so much into the "Magical Girl" genre, but I'm more likely to enjoy it if it's a "shounen/seinen" Magical Girl anime. "Shoujo Magical Girl" and "shounen/seinen Magical Girl" anime are usually quite different from each other (for obvious reasons -- their main targeted audiences are opposite genders). :P

They look like fat, super-deformed versions of the iron clubs that oni like to carry around.

That's a bag? I clicked before reading, and I thought the pig had her hands stuffed in her pants. Actually, looking more closely, it looks like a yellow version of the waistband/haramaki Zoro (One Piece) wears.

Fun update, especially the Tonde Buurin cels!

Thank you Keropi and Redwolf for the extra information. I really will need to look up Sasami when (if) it's finally released. It sounds like one of those that, like TnN, takes patience to work through a seemingly kiddish opening set of adventures, then comes around and grabs you when you're not looking. I've also added the good info that Redwolf provided to my TB descriptions. (Wikipedia added that the haramaki that might be the same as the "bag" that I thought Buurin was stuffed into was still in use to protect the bellies of pregnant women ... which makes the cel doubly intriguing in fact).

Thanks too to funshine for looking at a series that is often mystifying but always has lovely art.

Going into a busy stretch (major academic meeting next week), but I should be able to mount some interesting items (sketches and cels) later this month.

For the haramaki, they are also used today as belly warmers... here's a random article.

Looking forward to seeing your upcoming updates.
