Multiple images from genga sets

Post by Gonzai »

When you update your website with genga, do you prefer
to put up only one image, and maybe add other images
within so that people need to click on your image to view
the others, or do you prefer to display all of them??

I have always preferred to display one, but some of my
clients and I have talked about my cel colelction, and I
thought it would be better for them, when I give them the
link, that they could see all the images, instead of me just
telling them that there are multiple images for each set.

I know this has been discussed before, but I was just
wondering what most people's preferences are. :)

I personally only add one scan of the set. I pick the one that I think is best in the set and add that one online. Sometimes I add more due to that the layout is nicer so I add the layout and also add the genga or douga. I do add them on the same page/link instead of filling up a section with scans of the same set.
But I think each Gallery owner has their preference and if they think it's better to fill a section up with the same set that's up to them.

i own genga, but i do not collect it. as an artist, i appreciate each image individually, so that is just my preference. i cannot say for others, but if you are looking for a way to organize so many images, maybe try creating a section per scene or sequence. i organize mine by character, since i do not really have that many.

I don't own much in the way of genga and douga, but, as most of the items I own in this catagory are generally complete cuts, I just have them animated. That way, I can see all the images without clicking through several listings of the same image...and it looks nifty to see it animated.

It varies, but I generally go with "multiple images" though not the complete sketch set. I like to show at least the complete key images, though I'll often feature either the rough, genga, or shuusei, whichever is nicest, and put the others into thumbnails.

With dougas, I'm much more selective, often showing just the start or end key and often in a thumbnail to the featured genga. An exception would be cases where the douga is nicer than the genga (as is often the case with Kamikaze Kaitou Jeanne, in which the douga picks up an extra edge of intensity not in the genga). Then I usually do feature both.

Yes, I like to animate dougas rather than scan and display them all as still images. But overall I tend to be generous with displaying sketch sets, as the stages by which images were developed by the animators are often interesting to see. When the timing sheet has something interesting on it, heck, I'll scan that and put it on display. There are newbies who have never seen one, after all, and I learned to read parts of it for the first time only this spring.

When I did have sketches, I always displayed one and then had the rest inside that gallery link. For some insanely irrational reason, I just don't like seeing a gallery section that posts every shot from the same sequence. Inside my head, I am saying "Yeah, I got it already!"
Time is but an illusion. Lunch time...doubly so.

I don't like owning huge sketch sets. Luckily, most of the ones I own are rough genga, so there's only one or two of them.

Personally, I only look at the first sketch, or the most interesting one. However, if you want to show non-collectors how genga sets work, it might be of interest to scan the entire set and display them all.

Maybe you can compromise? Scan a couple of sets completely and display them in a special section or something. :)

I voted for multiple images. As a collector, I love seeing every last piece of artwork someone has. It's fun for me to try to spot the difference between sequence A1 & A2. :^^: Sure, it's a royal pain to scan them all when you have huge sketch lots. (I should know. X| ) But I think it's worth all the effort.

I generally only put the best image, although if there are other interesting images on correction layers I'll put those too. In the case where the sequence is more interesting than the image alone, I'll post selected images in order to give the general flow of the sequence. I've animated sequences before, but they take too long to load in general, and I try to keep the images reasonable so that I'm not losing people with slow connections who don't have the patience for big images to load. Best example of my current theory of drawing display is http://www.jcaliff.net/cels/nintama/ntr4cel.htm

This is probably not the best place to ask this question, but can someone tell me how to animate multiple sketches, specifically on RS?

I have a sequence of drawings up featuring Team Rocket getting ready to escape from a blimp. Because they are mostly different, I scanned all of them - otherwise I wouldn't really bother ^^;

In other words, I don't mind if they are dramatically or noticably different - you could "skip" a few drawings to get to the next important action, I guess is what I mean.

It is a pain to scan them all - boy do I know that. X|
I think whats cool about it, though, is that you get a
chance to see how nice a set really is.

I am always so scared to pay high prices for genga
I see on dealer sites or Yahoo Japan. I am always
afraid that there will be one good scan, and all the rest
are partials on different sheets.

To see all the images gives you a chance to cheer for
someone over getting a really great set. Otherwise, you
are left to guess whether the set is all nice full sketches,
or a bunch of partials.

Me too. ^^

I wish it was easier to display larger sets on RS, because I don't like how much space it takes up to show a set. But as you all know, I do it anyway, for the same reason that DT stated above.

I also agree that it makes understanding a set so much better when buying from another collector.

I keep a folder of scans of all my full sketches, but I generally would only post one single genga on my site with adding some more on the same page. I noticed that it got annoying when people posted all 8 sketches of the same genga set on different posts. Also, you get more page hits when you post only one sketch for each set.
