Sensei's Easter Update: CCS, Hyper Police, Inuyasha, etc.
Here comes
Sango Ninja-tail
Hopping down the douga trail.
Hippity, hoppity, update time again.
She’s got lilies in her hand
Picked, of course, in wishlist land
Hippity, hoppity, update time has come.
(Click the link and you’ll view one of Vampyreshoujo’s brilliant reanimations and understand the relevance of the song.)
I’ve finished a pretty substantial make-over, in the works since early January in fact, which includes additions to a number of series in my gallery. The real crowd-stoppers are from Cardcaptor Sakura and Hyper Police, but there are some very nice items from other series as well.
The stars:
From CCS, two new cels from “The” Power Transfer scene in Ep. 65,
Yue lowering Touya onto the bed, and then saying "Thank you."
From HP, two new Human Natsukis from Ep. 25 (the series finale), a nice portrait from a turning point, and a dramatic pan cel of her sprinting toward the series-ending high jump.
Also well worth a look:
From Inuyasha, two new sketch sets from the “Secret Garden” episode (Ep. 165, directed by Tatsuya Ishihara, of Haruhi Suzumiya fame). One is the “Hippity Hoppity” scene that the link above features, and the other is a great tome pan sketch that in fact embodies the climactic moment of the episode, Sango passing the tree in the "Secret Garden" episode
From Ah My Goddess! (thanks to a trade with the curator of “Gates of Alyssium”):
Holy Bell singing
Skuld and Urd in battle
Keiichi/Celestine defying God
From Tonde Buurin:
A funny cel of a grief-stricken Buurin and Ton-chan.
From A Tree of Palme:
A not-so-funny cel of the grief-stricken puppet Palme as he realizes his mistress Xian has died. This hugely oversized cel is one of many impressive images from this flawed but visually magnificent movie. The scan doesn’t do it justice; you’d just need to see it in person.
To buy this cel, I had to get a lot including two other oversized cels of the tediously dimwitted Hunters, but they too are worth hunting up in the gallery as examples of Nakamura’s bizarre, lucid-dreaming imagery.
Finally, though I know there aren’t many fans of Powerpuff Girls Z on Beta, I must admit to a little pride in the total revision of my “Kaoru Loves Biceps” gallery. It’s not often that one can get artwork representing whole chunks of any given episode, even in animators’ “rough papers.” And this episode is surprisingly good, dealing with what happens when Kaoru/Buttercup falls in love and asks the other two to help her replace her tomboy look with something that would suggest the persona of a traditionally delicate Japanese lady. I’ll at least call out one especially nice sketch that shows Kaoru after the kawaii make-over.
A long time coming, a long time planning, a long time writing up, a long time uploading, but (like Lent and Winter), it’s done at last! Enjoy!

KT: Thanks for visiting! I'm always learning about new series by looking at pretties in your galleries and others. It's always a treat to see IY animation actually works! I loved the Yue when I saw it, and I'm still very surprised that I got it for the opening bid.
lcatino: Thanks for the kudos -- but the bouquets by rights go to Vampyreshoujo (who also did my new animated avatar!) She really does wonderful, polished work.
Ronin: Thanks for the comment on Holy Bell. These are among my favorite scenes in the movie, and the bg Christine found and shared really makes this one "pop."
Cordelia: Yue and Touya ... y'think? I'd say there are more than undertones in this series, though as usual everything is made legal because they're not both human. (Kinda like Capt. Kirk and Spock.) Thanks for visiting.
ReiTheJelly: Thanks, Rei. All of us hard-bitten CCS fans can almost repeat the dialogue in this scene by heart (and some of us count the cels while it plays). I'm really happy to get these as a pair, especially as there only ever used to be one other "depositing" cel on RS (and now it too is gone) and none from the "Thank you" cut. I think I'm definitely going back to AMG, now that cels seem a little less pricy than they were when it was first out. Doing the trade made me all the more aware that AIC did a superb job artistically on this movie.
And thanks to all who stopped by!

funshine: Thank you for looking at the Palme. It's huge in person. You practically need your own movie theatre to collect cels from this film. And Tonde Buurin is always surreal to collect.
D123: I'm not a hard-bitten IY fan, but I knew this episode was special. For a while it had its own fan page, and it really is well told as well as beautifully drawn.
RoboFlonne: Thank you for looking at PPGZ. That's a series that hasn't gotten a lot of respect because it is a real kiddy show, but it's genuinely funny. And with a Portuguese dub now ready to air in Brazil, pode o mundo norte-americana é segura?
Vamppy, come and take a bow! It's great to be able to host your work!

Always late to the party... sorry about that...
Wonderful update, sensei! You've added quite a few gorgeous items to your collection. Like many others, I also really like your Yue and AMG additions, and I'm sure they'll receive many visits.
The new IY items are lovely and really display the talent and skill of the animators, and the addition of the "Caution! Fussy Notes" comments was great.
Great PPGZ, HP, Palme, and Tonde Buurin artwork too. (Looks like the girls took a straightener Kaoru - she looks so different.
)
Again, a really wonderful update. Well worth the wait.

*bows* A big "thank you" to everyone who enjoyed the Sango animation and for the kind compliments (KT, lcatino, and RF). And an especially big "thank you" to sensei for letting me put together the animation. It's always fun seeing how those come out.

Sensei emerges momentarily from another Open House, stuffed with eye candy.
Thank you all (and especially
Vamppy)!
Vampyreshoujo: I really do appreciate the reanimations, because, as you say, it lets us see just how these cuts work. I can get a general feel by scanning the dougas and then running through them in "slide show" mode as quickly as I can hit the "-->" button. But getting them looped like this lets one see at first the overall motion, then start appreciating all the little details that the studio sweat: the little tassels that flip just so.
Thanks for noticing the "Caution: Fussy Notes Ahead" avatar:

I figured that was needed for some of the really really technical discussions that I have a bad habit of getting into. (I once did the textual apparatus for some volumes of business letters written, or at least signed, by Nathaniel Hawthorne as American consul in Liverpool, and it's worth a look, especially if you're suffering from a stubborn case of insomnia.)
PPGZ is well worth a watch, especially once it gets into its stride and stops trying to imitate the Craig McCracken series but develops the subversive side of their anime avatars. Yes, the Buttercup makeover is amazing, the more so since the hair immediately goes back to normal after her henshin and stays that way afterwards. She also does a wonderful move in which she rips off her sailor suit and tosses it up in the air to begin said henshin. (Sadly, I don't have sketches for that part of the show.)
kageneko: Thank you! It's fortunate we don't collect the same series, and so I can visit your gallery (who knew there was such good art in "Babes in Toyland"!) and love but not drool.
Penguinton: I looked at that for a long time before pouncing. In fact, I pounced 5 seconds too late, and my bid was visible on Anicyo for a whole week as a result (during Lent!). I'm glad I added it, as it's much nicer than the WWF body slam sequence mates I've seen from time to time FA or FS. A great scene with unforgettable art.
Thanks again for visiting. I'm hard at work spending my Easter money, and while you won't see two such glorious Yue cels next time, you will see some pretty Sakuras, more AMG (my first OVA cels!), and more of my usual passions: Rayearth, Kamikaze Kaitou Jeanne, Tonde Buurin, and a new batch of unscanned PPGZ that will expand my recently identified "Great Chase" sequence.
Spring is spreading: I saw hanami as far north as the PA border this week.
